Booming sound while driving with audio unit on or off (Part 1) (A/T)
NOTE:
- Check for all system's DTCs first with the HDS. If there are any DTCs stored, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
- Check the vehicle battery condition first Testing and Inspection.
- Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Operate the audio unit, and check the function of the speakers.
Is a booming sound or a low-frequency hum heard from the speakers?
YES -
Go to step 3.
NO -
Go to symptom troubleshooting No sound is heard from speaker(s).
- With premium audio system No Sound Is Heard From the Speaker(s) (Display Is Normal) (With Premium Audio)
- Without premium audio system No Sound Is Heard From the Speaker(s) (Display Is Normal) (Without Premium Audio)
3. Turn the audio system off.
4. Make sure all doors, hood, and the trunk are closed.
5. Start the engine, and let it idle.
6. Do the active noise cancellation (ANC) Self-diagnostic Function Audio System Self-Diagnostic Function.
7. Check the test items on tests 1 through 8.
NOTE: Move on to the next test item within 50 seconds, or the self-diagnostic test ends.
Do you hear a low-frequency hum sound from the speakers for more than 5 second for all test items?
YES -
Go to step 8.
NO -
Go to the appropriate step listed.
- If all the tests failed:
- With premium audio system, go to step 25.
- Without premium audio system, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).
- If the 3rd tests failed:
- With premium audio system, go to step 39.
- Without premium audio system, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).
- If the 4th tests failed:
- With premium audio system, go to step 44.
- Without premium audio system, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).
- If the 5th tests failed:
- With navigation: go to step 49.
- Without navigation: go to step 58.
- If the 6th tests failed, go to step 69.
- If the 7th tests failed, go to step 80.
- If the 8th tests failed, go to step 90.
8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
9. Connect the HDS to the DLC Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
10. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
11. Select PGM-FI SYSTEM with the HDS.
12. Select VTEC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
13. Select SOLENOID VALVE ACTIVATION, then select SOLENOID A (B1) ON/OFF and prepare to do the function test.
14. Do the active noise cancellation (ANC) Self-diagnostic Function Audio System Self-Diagnostic Function.
15. Do the 8th test by pressing the No. 1 button.
16. Select ROCKER ARM OIL CONTROL SOLENOID A ON with the HDS, and move on to the 9th test by pressing the No. 1 button.
Do you hear a low-frequency hum sound from the speakers for more than 5 seconds?
YES -
Go to step 17.
NO -
Go to step 1 on Booming sound while driving with audio unit on or off (Part 2).
17. Select ROCKER ARM OIL CONTROL SOLENOID A (B2) COMMAND and RETURN signal ON with the HDS, by pressing the ENTER button, and go to the 10th test by pressing the No. 1 button.
Do you hear a low-frequency hum sound from the speakers for more than 5 seconds?
YES -
Go to step 18.
NO -
Go to step 15 on Booming sound while driving with audio unit on or off (Part 2).
18. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
19. Disconnect the HDS from the DLC.
20. Start the engine, and let it idle.
21. Do the active noise cancellation (ANC) Self-diagnostic Function Audio System Self-Diagnostic Function.
22. Do the 10th test by pressing the No. 1 button.
23. Set the parking brake, and hold the engine speed at 2,500 rpm (in P or N), and move on to the 11th test by pressing the No. 1 button.
24. Press the No. 1 button several times to turn the ANC on and off.
Do you hear a change in the engine pitch?
YES -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the audio unit, the PCM, and the under dash fuse box. Then, go to step 1 and recheck.
NO -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation)
25. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
26. Connect a voltmeter between stereo amplifier connector A (24P) terminals No. 11 and No. 22.
NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.
27. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
28. Do the active noise cancellation (ANC) Self-diagnostic Function Audio System Self-Diagnostic Function.
29. Measure voltage during the 1st test with the display indicating OFF (press the No. 1 button to switch from ON to OFF).
NOTE: Measure voltage within 50 seconds after you started the 1st test OFF.
Is there about 0.5 V?
YES -
Replace the stereo amplifier Service and Repair.�
NO -
Go to step 30.
30. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
31. Connect a voltmeter between stereo amplifier connector A (24P) terminals No. 12 and No. 23.
NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.
32. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
33. Do the active noise cancellation (ANC) Self-diagnostic Function Audio System Self-Diagnostic Function.
34. Measure voltage during the 1st test with the display indicating OFF (press the No. 1 button to switch from ON to OFF).
NOTE: Measure voltage within 50 seconds after you started the 1st test OFF.
Is there about 0.2 V?
YES -
Replace the stereo amplifier Service and Repair.�
NO -
Go to step 35.
35. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
36. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).
37. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 38.
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
38. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector C (16P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
NO -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation)
39. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
40. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).
41. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 42.
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
42. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 9 and No. 10 individually.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
NO -
Go to step 43.
43. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 9 and No. 10.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
NO -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)

44. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
45. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).
46. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 47.
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
47. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 individually.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
NO -
Go to step 48.
48. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).�
NO -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)

49. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
50. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.
NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.
51. Turn the ignition switch to ACCESSORY (I).
52. Make a loud noise in front of the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone.
Does the voltage change when making a loud noise in front of the microphone?
YES -
Replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).�
NO -
Go to step 53.
53. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
54. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector.
55. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector No. 4 terminal.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 56.
NO -
There is an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness.�
56. Check for continuity between front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 57.
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone and body ground (G501) Harness Locations.
57. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
There is a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness.�
NO -
Replace the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone Front HFL-Navigation-ANC Microphone Removal/Installation.�
58. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
59. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and No. 11.
NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.
60. Turn the ignition switch to ACCESSORY (I).
61. Make a loud noise in front of the front active noise cancellation microphone.
Does the voltage change when making a large noise in front of the microphone?
YES -
Replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).�
NO -
Go to step 62.
62. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
63. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector.
64. Connect front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3 with a jumper wire.
65. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and No. 11.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 66.
NO -
There is an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness.�
66. Remove the jumper wire.
67. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and No. 11.
Is there continuity?
YES -
There is a short in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness.�
NO -
Go to step 68.
68. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
There is a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness.�
NO -
Replace the front active noise cancellation microphone Active Noise Cancellation Microphone Removal/Installation.�
69. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
70. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 5 and No. 12.
NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.
71. Turn the ignition switch to ACCESSORY (I).
72. Make a loud noise in front of the rear active noise cancellation microphone.
Does the voltage change when making a large noise in front of the microphone?
YES -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation)
NO -
Go to step 73.
73. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
74. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector.
75. Connect rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3 with a jumper wire.
76. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 5 and No. 12.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 77.
NO -
There is an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (24P) and the rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal/Installation.�
77. Remove the jumper wire.
78. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 5 and No. 12.
Is there continuity?
YES -
There is a short in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal/Installation.�
NO -
Go to step 79.
79. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 5 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
There is a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and the rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector. Replace the affected shielded harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal/Installation.�
NO -
Replace the rear active noise cancellation microphone Active Noise Cancellation Microphone Removal/Installation.�
80. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
81. Start the engine, and let it idle.
82. Measure voltage between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.
Is there about 5 V (pulses)?
YES -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation)
NO -
Go to step 83.
83. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
84. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
85. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and PCM connector A (49P).
86. Connect PCM connector A (49P) terminal No. 29 to body ground with a jumper wire.
87. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 88.
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and PCM connector A (49P).�
88. Remove the jumper wire.
89. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short to body ground in the wire between audio unit connector C (16P) and PCM connector A (49P).�
NO -
Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software ECM/PCM Update or substitute a known-good PCM Service and Repair.�
90. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
91. Do the MICU input test to check the B-CAN line between the audio unit and MICU Drivers and Passengers MICU Input Test.
Is the B-CAN line between the audio unit and the MICU OK?
YES -
Replace the audio unit.�
- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation)
NO -
Repair an open in the wire between audio unit connector B (20P) and MICU connector P (20P).�
