Engine Removal

Special Tools Required
^ Universal eyelet 07AAK-SNAA120
^ Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016 *
^ 2006 Civic engine hanger VSB02C000025 *
^ Engine support hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256 *
*: Available through Honda Tool and Equipment Program, 1-888-424-6857

NOTE:
^ Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
^ To avoid damaging wire and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
^ Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring, hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system or the navigation system (if equipped), then write down the audio presets.
2. Remove the cowl cover and the under-cowl panel.
3. Turn the IMA battery module switch OFF.
4. Relieve the fuel pressure.
5. Secure the hood in the wide open position (support rod in the lower hole).





6. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then disconnect the positive cable.
7. Remove the battery and battery box.
8. Remove the engine cover.





9. Remove the resonator.
10. Remove the intake air duct.





11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
12. Remove the harness clamp (A), then remove the starter cable (B) and the ground cable (C).





13. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) cover (A), then remove the bolts (B).





14. Disconnect the PCM connectors (A).





15. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors (A), then remove the harness clamp (B) on the left side of the engine compartment.





16. Disconnect the vacuum hose.





17. Disconnect the purge control solenoid valve connector (A), then remove the harness clamp (B).





18. Disconnect the purge joint from the clamp bracket (c), then remove the fuel pipe nut (D) and the purge control solenoid valve bracket bolts (E).
19. Remove the drive belt.
20. Remove the radiator cap.
21. Raise the vehicle on the lift to full height.
22. Remove the front wheels.
23. Remove the engine undercover (A) and the splash shield (B).





24. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant.
25. Drain the CVT fluid (CVTF).
26. Drain the engine oil.
27. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
28. Remove the radiator.
29. Remove the A/C,compressor, then disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A) without disconnecting the A/C hoses.

NOTE: Hang the A/C compressor with a rope.





30. Remove the steering wheel.
31. Remove the steering joint cover nuts (A), then remove the cover (B).





32. Lock the steering wheel. Make reference marks (A) across the steering joint and steering gearbox pinion shaft. Remove the steering joint bolt (B), and disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft (C).





33. Remove the center guide (A) (if equipped), and discard it. The center guide is for factory assembly use only.





34. Remove the IMA motor power cable clamps (A), then remove the bolt (B).





35. Disconnect the water bypass hose (A) and the heater hoses (B).





36. Disconnect the IMA motor power cable connector.

NOTE: If the motor power cable terminals are wet, dry them with a clean towel. Do not use compressed air.





37. Remove the shift cable.
38. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector (A) and the CVT input shaft (drive pulley) speed sensor connector (B), then remove the clamp (C).





39. Remove the IMA motor power cable mounting bolts (D).
40. Raise the vehicle on the lift to full height.
41. Remove the under-floor three way catalytic converter (TWC).





42. Disconnect the front stabilizer link.
43. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints.
44. Remove the driveshafts. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
45. Disconnect the steering gearbox harness connectors (A).





46. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
47. Install the universal eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) to the threaded hole (A) on the cylinder head with a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (B).





48. Install the front leg assembly (A), hook (B), and wing nut (C) from an A and Reds engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the 2006 civic engine hanger (VSB02C000025). Carefully position the engine hanger on the vehicle, and attach the hook to the universal eyelet (D). Tighten the wing nut by hand to lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.





49. Make sure the hoist brackets are positioned properly. Raise the vehicle on the lift to full height.
50. Remove the lower torque rod mounting bolts.





51. Note the reference marks (A) on both sides of the subframe that line up with the body (B).





52. Loosen both mid stiffener mounting bolts (A) on both sides.





53. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).





54. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.
55. Remove the four bolts securing the front subframe, and lower the subframe.





56. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
57. Install the universal eyelet to the threaded hole (A) on the cylinder head with a 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (B).





58. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal eyelet (B), and the transmission hook (C). Lift up on the engine/transmission until it's securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger and 2006 civic engine hanger.





59. Remove the transmission mount bracket support bolt and nuts.





60. Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the side engine mount bracket (B).





61. Check that the engine/IMA motor/transmission is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.
62. Slowly lower the engine/IMA motor/transmission about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/IMA motor/transmission, then lower it all the way.
63. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/IMA motor/transmission.
64. Raise the vehicle all the way, and remove the engine/IMA motor/transmission from under the vehicle.
