Damper & Spring Disassembly, Inspection, and Reassembly

Damper/Spring Disassembly, Inspection, and Reassembly

Damper/Spring:

NOTE: When compressing the damper spring, use a commercially available strut spring compressor (Branick MST-580A or Model 7200, or equivalent) according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Disassembly
1. Compress the damper spring, then remove the 12 mm nut (A) while holding the damper shaft with a hex wrench (B). Do not compress the damper spring more than necessary to remove the nut.

2. Release the pressure from the strut spring compressor, then disassemble the damper as shown in the Exploded View.

NOTE: To remove the damper mounting bearing (A) from the upper spring seat, attach a suitable attachment to the resin part (B) of the bearing and push it slowly.

Inspection
1. Install the 12 mm nut on the damper shaft end, and set the socket wrench and T-handle on the nut.
2. Compress the damper assembly by hand, and check for smooth operation through a full stroke, both compression and extension. The damper should extend smoothly and constantly when compression is released. If it does not, the gas is leaking and the damper should be replaced.

3. Check for oil leaks, abnormal noises, and binding during these tests.

Reassembly

NOTE: Assemble each of the disassembled parts by referring to the Exploded View.

1. Install the damper mounting bearing (A) on the upper spring seat (B). Do not tap on the damper mounting bearing to assemble it with the upper spring seat. Push into the upper spring seat slowly as shown.

2. Install the upper spring seat (A) to the spring mounting seat (B).

NOTE: Make sure to securely set the upper spring seat to the hook (C) on the spring mounting seat.

3. Apply a light coat of silicone grease to the surface of the bump stop (D).
4. Install the bump stop and the dust cover (E) to the upper spring seat.

NOTE: Push the bump stop and the dust cover into the upper spring seat securely.

5. Install the spring mounting seat (A) on the damper spring (B), then align the upper end (C) of the damper spring with the seat stop (D).

6. Compress the damper spring.
7. Install all the parts except the 12 mm nut onto the damper unit (A) by referring to the Exploded View.

8. Align the bottom of the damper spring (A) with the stepped part (B) of the lower spring seat.

9. Compress the damper spring to the position (A) where the damper shaft (B) comes in contact with the damper mounting bearing. Do not excessively compress the damper spring.

10. Install the 12 mm nut on the damper shaft. Hold the damper shaft with a hex wrench (C), and tighten the 12 mm nut to the specified torque value.
