Axle Beam: Service and Repair
Axle Beam Replacement1. Remove the hub bearing unit.
2. Disconnect the brake line (A) from the wheel cylinder (B).
3. Remove the parking brake cable clamp (C), then remove the rear brake assembly (D) from the spindle.
NOTE:
^ The parking brake cable must not be bent or distorted. This will lead to stiff operation and premature cable failure.
^ During installation, install the new flange bolt (E).
4. Remove the wheel sensor (A), and the spindle (B) from the axle beam.
NOTE: During installation, install a new flat-head screw (C).
5. Remove the wheel sensor harness clip (A) from the rear axle beam. Do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector.
6. Disconnect the brake line (B) from the brake hose (C), and remove the brake hose on the rear axle beam by removing the brake hose clip (D).
NOTE:
^ Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if brake fluid gets on the paint, wash it off immediately with water.
^ During installation, install the new brake hose clip.
7. Remove the brake line clip (E), and wheel sensor harness clamp (F) from the axle beam.
8. Remove the exhaust pipe B.
9. Remove the fuel filler pipe.
10. Place a floor jack under the center of the axle beam, and support it by raising the floor jack.
11. Remove the axle beam mounting bolts (A) on the both sides.
NOTE: During installation, install a new axle beam mounting bolts.
12. Lower the jack slowly, then remove the axle beam (B).
13. Install the axle beam in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
^ First install all the rear suspension components and lightly tighten bolts, then place a jack under the axle beam, and raise the suspension to load the vehicle weight before fully tightening bolts to the specified torque values.
^ Before installing the brake drum, clean the mating surface of the hub bearing unit and the inside of the brake drum.
^ Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface of the brake drum and the inside of the wheel.
^ After installing, fill the reservoir with new brake fluid, and bleed the brake system.
^ Check the brake hose and line joint for leaks, and tighten if necessary.
^ Check the brake hoses for interference and twisting.
^ Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
