Transmission Removal

Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required
^ Engine support hanger, A and Reds AAR-T-12566
^ Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016
^ Engine hanger balance bar VSB02C000019

These special tools are available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 1-888-424-6857.

NOTE:
^ Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
^ To avoid damaging the wire and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio unit and navigation system, then write down the audio presets.
2. Remove the bolts securing the support strut bracket on the right side hood. Raise and secure the hood (A) in a vertical position, then install the strut bracket (B) by turning it over with its bolt in lower position.

NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position; it will damage the support strut and the hood.





3. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, then disconnect the positive terminal.
4. Remove the battery hold-down bracket, and remove the battery and battery tray.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove the battery base6
7. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position, then remove the key from the ignition switch to lock the steering column.
8. Disconnect the steering joint.
9. Remove the splash shield.
10. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).





11. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
12. Remove the starter cables (A) from the starter, and remove the harness clamp (B) from the clamp bracket(C).





13. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector (D).
14. Remove the bolt securing the radiator hose clamp/harness clamp bracket (E).
15. Remove the transmission ground cable (F).
16. Remove the dipstick, then remove the starter (A) and starter gasket (B) from the torque converter housing.





17. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (A).





18. Remove the spring clip/washer (B) and the control pin (C), then separate the shift cable end (D) from the control lever (E).
19. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A), A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B), and 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch harness connector (C), and remove the harness cover mounting bolt (D).





20. Remove the harness clamp (A) from the clamp bracket (B).





21. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C), and remove the connector bracket (D) and the harness clamp bracket.
22. Remove the bolts securing the harness clamp brackets.





23. Disconnect the auxiliary transmission fluid pump (ATFP) motor connector (A) and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B).





24. Disconnect the transmission range switch connector (A), and remove the harness clamp (B) from the clamp bracket (C).





25. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (D), 3rd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (E), and ATF temperature sensor connector (F).
26. Disconnect the 2nd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector.





27. Remove the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the cooler hoses and lines.





28. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.
29. Remove the connector bracket from the engine front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balancer bar front arm.





30. Disconnect the solenoid valve connector (A), then remove the bracket (B) from the engine rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balancer bar rear arm.





31. Install the engine hanger balancer bar (VSB02C000019); attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with the spacer and the 10 mm bolt, and attach the rear arm (B) to the rear cylinder head with the 8 mm bolt.





32. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T-12566) to the vehicle, and attach the hook to the engine balancer bar slot. Tighten the wing nut (C) by hand, and lift and support the engine.
33. Remove the front engine mount stop (A) and the front mount bolt (B).





34. Remove exhaust pipe A.





35. Insert a 6 mm allen wrench (A) in the top of the ball joint pins (B), and remove the nuts (C), then separate the stabilizer links (D) from the lower arms (E).
36. Remove the cotter pins (F), castle nuts (G), damper pinch bolts (H), self-locking nuts (I), bolts (J), and damper forks (K), then separate the ball joints from the lower arms.





37. Remove the cotter pins (L) and nuts (M), and separate the steering tie-rod end ball joints (N) from the knuckles.
38. Remove the steering gearbox heat shield.





39. Disconnect the front mount control solenoid valve connector (A), and remove the harness clamp (B).





40. Remove the ATF cooler hose (A) from the ATF cooler (B). Turn the end of the cooler hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose.





41. Remove the torque converter housing cover (A), and remove the drive plate bolts (B) (8) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.





42. Disconnect the connectors at the right of the steering gearbox, and remove the connector from the connector bracket.





43. Disconnect the power steering angle sensor connector.





44. Remove the shift cable bracket on the front subframe.





45. Remove the lower transmission mount bolt.





46. Remove the rear mount base bracket bolts.





47. Remove the subframe middle mounts from both sides.





48. Make a appropriate reference lines (A) at both ends of the subframe (B) that line up with the edge (C) of the stiffener (D).





49. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).





50. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.
51. Remove the four bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), then lower the front subframe.





52. Remove the lower transmission mount.





53. Pry out the driveshafts from the differential and the intermediate shaft.
54. Remove the rear WU-TWC bracket (A) and the heat shield (B).





55. Remove the intermediate shaft (C).
56. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over driveshaft ends and intermediate shaft ends.
57. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.





58. Remove the sensor harness clamp bracket (A) from the front mount bracket (B).





59. Remove the front mount bracket.
60. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (A) using a socket 22 mm in length.





61. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolt (B).
62. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.





63. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame.
64. Place a jack under the transmission.
65. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.





66. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.

NOTE:
^ The motor rotor contains very strong magnets and should be handled with special care.
^ Keep pieces of metal and all foreign particles out of the motor rotor during the transmission removal.

67. Slowly lower the transmission about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnect and free from the transmission, then lower it all the way.
68. Inspect the drive plate, and replace if it is damaged.
69. Remove the torque converter.
