Gauge Control Module Displays Erratic Average Fuel Mileage
BACKGROUND
The average fuel mileage displayed on trip meters A and B incorrectly resets, causing an erratic mileage reading. This is caused by a software problem in the tachometer gauge control module (lower gauge assembly).

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ Once the HDS retrieves the ODO (odometer) data from the original gauge control module, the ODO value on the LCD displays "----," making the ODO function unusable.
^ The HDS holds only one ODO value in its memory.
^ Get a new gauge control module before doing the ODO rewriting procedure.
^ Be careful not to damage any interior trim parts.
1. Connect the HDS to the vehicle's DLC (data link connector).
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position, then turn on the HDS.
3. From the HDS BODY ELECTRICAL menu, select Gauges.
4. From the ADJUSTMENT menu, select Gauge Control Module Replacement.
5. From the Gauge Control Module Replacement menu, select Read Out Data, then follow the on-screen instructions to retrieve the ODO values.
6. Tilt the steering column up.
7. Detach the lower clips on the dashboard lower cover by gently pulling on the lower edge of the cover.
8. Detach the upper clips, then release the hook and the pin by pulling back on the cover. Remove the cover.
9. Tilt the steering column down, and extend the telescoping feature to its limit.
10. Remove the screw from the bottom of the subdisplay visor.
11. Release the clips and the hook from the subdisplay visor by placing your hand behind the driver's pocket and pulling gently.
12. Using a trim tool, pry up on the inside edge of the subdisplay visor to detach the clip and release the pin.
13. Detach the clips along the upper edge of the subdisplay visor, then gently pull out the visor to release the hooks.
14. Disconnect the illumination control switch connector and the power mirror switch connector.
15. Remove the three screws from the gauge control module, then disconnect the 36P connector, and remove the module.
16. Remove the lens and the visor from the original gauge control module, and install them on the new one:
^ Remove the lens (six clips).
^ Remove the visor (six clips).
^ Install the visor and the lens on the new gauge control module, and make sure all the clips are secure.
17. Install the new gauge control module in the reverse order of removal. Reinstall all removed parts.
18. Follow the instructions on the HDS display to write the ODO value to the new gauge control module.
19. Use the HDS to clear any stored body electrical DTCs.
20. Center-punch a completion mark below the first character of the engine compartment VIN:
^ Slide open the FRAME NUMBER door on the center cowl cover.
^ Use a long punch to reach the VIN.
