DTC P0406: EGR Valve Position Sensor Circuit High Voltage

NOTE:
- Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to D17A2, D17A6 engines (2001-2003 models).
- Information marked with double asterisks (**) applies to 2004-2005 models.
- Check and record any freeze data before resetting the ECM/PCM.

1. Reset the ECM/PCM.
2. Start the engine.

Is DTC P1498* (P0406)** indicated?

YES - Go to step 3.

NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EGR valve and at the ECM/PCM.

3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
4. Disconnect the EGR valve 6P connector.
5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

6. Measure voltage between EGR valve 6P connector terminals No.2 and No.3.

Is there about 5 V?

YES - Replace the EGR valve.

NO - Go to step 7.

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
8. Disconnect ECM/PCM connector A (31 P).

9. Connect EGR valve 6P connector terminal No.2 to body ground with a jumper wire.

10. Check for continuity between ECM/PCM connector terminal A10 and body ground.

Is there about 5 V?

YES - Update the ECM/PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM/PCM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM/PCM, replace the original ECM/PCM.

NO - Repair open in the wire between the EGR valve and the ECM/PCM (A10).
