Shift Cable: Service and Repair
Shift Cable Replacement1. Raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Shift the transmission into the N position.
3. Remove the center console panel and center console.
4. Remove the nut securing the shift cable end (A), then separate the cable end from the shift lever assembly.
5. Rotate the socket holder (A) on the shift cable (B) a quarter turn; the tab (C) on the socket holder will be in the opening of the shift lever bracket base (D). Then slide the holder out to remove the shift cable from the shift cable bracket base.
6. Remove the bolts and nuts securing the shift cable brackets (A).
7. Remove the grommet (B), and pull the shift cable (C) out.
8. Remove the air cleaner housing and intake air duct.
9. Remove the air cleaner housing bracket (A).
10. Remove the spring clip (A) and washers (B).
11. Loosen the locknut (C) on the shift cable (D), then separate the shift cable from the shift cable bracket (E) and the control lever (F).
12. Insert the new shift cable (A) through the grommet hole (B). then install the shift cable brackets (C).
13. Install the grommet in the grommet hole.
14. Install the shift cable (A) by aligning socket (B) with the shift cable bracket (C). Apply Super High Temp Urea Grease (P/N 08798-9002) to the shift cable end, and install the shift cable end (D) over the control lever pin (E).
15. Tighten the locknut (F).
16. Install the plastic washer (G), then steel washer (H), and install the spring clip (I) in the direction shown.
17. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and verify that the N indicator comes on.
18. If necessary, push the shift cable (A) until it stops, then release it. Pull the shift cable back two steps so that the shift cable position is in N. Do not hold the shift cable guide (B) to adjust the shift cable.
19. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
20. Shift the shift lever into the N position, if necessary.
21. Insert a 6.0 mm (0.24 inch) pin (A) through the positioning hole (B) on the shift lever bracket base and into the positioning hole (C) on the shift lever assembly. The shift lever is secured in N position.
22. Align the socket holder (A) on the shift cable (B) with the slot in the cable bracket base (C), then slide the holder into the base. Install the shift cable end (D) over the mounting stud (E) by aligning its square hole (F) with the square fitting (G) at the bottom of the stud. Rotate the holder a quarter turn to secure the shift cable. Do not install the shift cable by twisting the shift cable guide (H).
23. Verify that the shift cable end (A) is properly installed on the mounting stud (B).
24. If improperly installed, remove the shift cable from the shift cable bracket base, and reinstall the shift cable. Do not install the shift cable end on the mounting stud while the shift cable is on the shift cable bracket base.
25. Install and tighten the nut.
26. Remove the 6.0 mm (0.24 inch) pin that was installed to hold the shift lever.
27. Move the shift lever to each position, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
28. Allow the wheels to rotate freely.
29. Start the engine, and check the shift lever operation in all gears.
30. Reinstall the center console, console panel, and related parts.
31. Install the air cleaner housing bracket (A).
32. Install the air cleaner housing and intake air duct.
