Campaign - ECM Update to Prevent DTC P0420 and P1021: Overview
05-028September 1, 2006
Applies To:
2003-04 Civic Hybrid - ALL
2005 Civic Hybrid - From VIN JHMES9...5800001 thru JHMES9...58018604
Product Update: ECM Update to Prevent Catalyst DTC P0420 and/or VPS DTC P1021, MCM Update to Current Specifications
(Supersedes 05-028, dated August 13, 2005)
Updated information is shown with asterisks.
BACKGROUND
The current ECM PGM-FI software, along with unusual driving conditions, could cause the engine to run lean. Over time, this could lead to catalyst deterioration and cause the EGM to store DTC P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold).
The current PGM-FI software could also misinterpret normal oil pressure rise during the first engine start after an oil and filter change. This could cause DTC P1021 (valve pause system [VPS] stuck on) to be set.
The motor control module (MGM) IMA battery software in the affected vehicles does not meet current specifications.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this campaign. A copy of the customer notification is shown in this service bulletin.
Some of the affected vehicles are still in dealer inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before retail sale.
Before beginning work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by checking at least one of these items:
^ The customer has a notification letter.
^ The vehicle is shown on your campaign responsibility report.
^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.
In addition to these verification items, check for a punch mark above the third character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.
*This campaign action was originally scheduled to expire on July 31, 2006, but is being extended indefinitely.*

REPAIR PROCEDURE A
2003-04 Civic Hybrid: ALL
2005 Civic Hybrid: From VIN JHMES9...5S0001 thru JHMES9...5S016049
NOTE:
^ Before you update a control module, the 12 V battery in the vehicle must be fully charged.
^ If you have a problem during the programming procedure (programming takes over 15 minutes, status bar goes over 100 percent, D4/Immobilizer light flashes, HDS tablet freezes, etc.), follow the steps listed below to minimize the chance of damaging the ECM.
^ Leave the Ignition Switch in the "ON" position.
^ Connect a jumper battery. (Do not connect a battery charger)
- Shut down the HDS.
- Disconnect the HDS from the vehicle DLC (data link connector).
- Reboot the HDS.
- Connect the HDS back to the vehicle DLC, and retry the reprogramming procedure.
NOTE:
If the vehicle's 12 V battery output drops below 10 V during programming, the programming status bar may go beyond 100 percent.
^ To prevent control module damage, do not operate anything electrical (audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, moonroof, etc.) during the update.
1. If not already done, load software version 1.018.008 or later onto the HDS.
2. Connect the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) to the DLC (data link connector), check for DTCs, and clear any stored codes.
NOTE:
A small number of vehicles may have DTC P0420 stored. These vehicles will also require replacement of the catalytic converter-exhaust manifold.
3. Select the updating icon.
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). In the Updating Honda Control Modules screen, select the Confirm check mark icon.
5. In the system select screen, select PGM-FI, then select the Confirm check mark icon.
6. Check the program ID to determine if the PGM-FI software needs updating.
NOTE:
Confirm that the update program ID and part number are in the software versions table. If the update program ID and part number are not in the table, make sure you have HDS software version 1.018.008 or later loaded.
^ If the ECM has already been updated with the most recent software available on your HDS, you will see this screen. Select the Exit System button. Then go to step 12.
^ If the PGM-FI software needs updating, you will see the screen. Select the Confirm check mark icon, and go to step 7.
7. In the Confirm the Control Module Update screen, select the Yes icon.
8. In the HDS Tablet Programming screen, select the Confirm check mark icon after the programming is completed.
9. In the Updating Honda Control Module screen select the Confirm check mark icon.
NOTE:
To avoid permanent control module damage, do not turn the ignition switch off during the update.
10. When updating is complete, turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then turn it to ON (II).
11. In the Updating Honda Control Modules with the HDS Tablet screen, first select the NO icon, then select the Confirm check mark icon on the next screen.
12. In the System Selection screen, select IMA Battery, then select the Confirm check mark icon.
