Thermostat: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Drain the engine coolant.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing.





3. Remove the upper radiator hose (A), lower radiator hose joint (B), heater hoses (C) and water bypass hose (D).





4. Remove the thermostat housing (A), then remove the thermostat (B).

Installation
1. Remove old liquid gasket from the thermostat housing mating surfaces, bolts and bolt holes.





2. Apply a 1.5 mm wide bead of the liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0009, along the broken lines (A).

NOTE: Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing old residue.





3. Install the rubber seal (A) on the thermostat (B), then install the thermostat with the pin (C) up.
4. Install the thermostat housing (D).

NOTE: After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with coolant.





5. Install the lower radiator hose joint (A), use a new O-ring (B).
6. Install the upper radiator hose (C), heater hoses (D) and water bypass hose (E).
7. Install the air cleaner housing.
8. Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed air from the cooling system with the heater valve open.
