Hot Restart Fan Relay Circuit (Open)
Troubleshooting (Open)NOTE: After troubleshooting, perform the engine control module (ECM) idle learn procedure.
1. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or Neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
2. Connect the Honda PGM Tester to the data link connector (DLC), and follow the tester's prompts in the "SCS" menu (see the Honda PGM Tester Operator's Manual).
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
Does the radiator fan operate for 30 seconds?
YES - Fan control system is OK.
NO - Go to step 4.
4. Check the No. 14 (40A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box, and No. 60 (20A) fuse in the multi relay box, and No. 70 (7.5A) fuse in the auxiliary holder.
Is the fuse(s) OK?
YES - Go to step 5.
NO - Replace the fuse and recheck.
5. Remove the hot restart fan relay from the multifuse/relay box, and test it.
Is the relay OK?
YES - Go to step 6.
NO - Replace the hot restart fan relay.
6. Measure the voltage between hot restart fan relay 5P socket terminal No. 5 and body ground with the ignition switch ON (II).
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 7.
NO - Repair open in the wire between the PGM-FI main relay 1 and multi-fuse/relay box.
7. Disconnect the radiator fan motor 2P connector.
8. Check for continuity between the hot restart fan relay 5P socket terminal No. 2 and the radiator fan motor 2P connector terminal No. 2.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 9.
NO - Repair open in the wire between the multifuse/relay box and radiator fan motor 2P connector terminal No. 2.
9. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
10. Wait for 1 minute. If radiator fan is running, wait for 1 minute after the radiator fan stops.
11. Disconnect engine control module (ECM) connector E (31P).
12. Check for continuity between the hot restart fan relay 5P socket terminal No. 3 and ECM connector terminal E11.
Is there continuity?
YES - Substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If the system works properly, replace the ECM.
NO - Repair open in the wire between the multifuse/relay box and ECM.
