DTC P2158: Secondary Gear Speed Sensor 2 Circuit Malfunction

(2003 AT-PZEV (SULEV) and 2004-2005 models)

NOTE:
- Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to 2003 ULEV model.
- The MIL and the D indicators may come on along with DTC P2158 (P1884)*. If they do, troubleshoot DTC P2158 (P1884)* first, then troubleshoot the CVT system.

1. Reset the ECM with the HDS.
2. Test-drive under these conditions:

- Transmission in D position
- Vehicle speed at 31 mph (50 km/h)
- During the drive, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) for 5 seconds

3. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P2158 (P1884)* indicated?

YES - Go to step 4.

NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at secondary gear speed sensor 2 and the ECM.

4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
5. Disconnect secondary gear speed sensor 2 3P connector.
6. Disconnect TCM connector C (17P).
7. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

8. Measure voltage between secondary gear speed sensor 2 3P connector terminal No.2 and body ground.

Is there about 5 V?

YES - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM.

NO - Go to step 9.

9. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminal A18 and body ground.

Is there about 5 V?

YES - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A18) and secondary gear speed sensor 2.

NO - Go to step 10.

10. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
11. Wait for 1 minute. If the radiator fan is running, wait for 1 minute after it stops.
12. Disconnect ECM connector A (31P).

13. Check for continuity between ECM connector terminal A18 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES - Repair short in the wire between the ECM (A15) and secondary gear speed sensor 2.

NO - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with known-good ECM, replace the original ECM.
