DTC P1891: Problem in Start Clutch Control System2003 AT-PZEV (SULEV) and 2004-2005 AT-PZEV Models
NOTE: Record all freeze data and review General Troubleshooting Information before you troubleshoot.
1. Check for other DTCs indicated simultaneous with the DTC P1891.
Are there any other DTCs?
YES- Perform the troubleshooting for the indicated DTC. Recheck for DTC P1891 after troubleshooting.
NO- Go to step 2.
2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
3. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector.
4. Start the engine.
5. Shift to the D position, and check whether the vehicle moves.
Does the vehicle move?
YES- Go to step 6.
NO- Replace the start clutch.
6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
7. Connect the solenoid harness connector.
8. Start the engine, and shift to the D position.
9. Check whether the vehicle creeps and check the creeping speed on level ground.
Does the vehicle creep and is the creeping speed about 3 mph (5 km/h)?
YES- Go to step 10.
NO- Replace the CVT start clutch pressure control valve, then go to step 16.
10. Set the parking brake, and block the front wheels securely.
11. Firmly press the brake pedal, and shift to the D position.
12. While pressing the brake pedal firmly, also press the accelerator for 6 - 8 seconds at full throttle.
13. Measure the stall speed rpm in the D position.
Does the engine speed exceed 3,500 rpm?
YES- Replace the Start clutch: then go to step 16.
NO- Go to step 14.
14. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector.
15. Start the engine, shift to the D position, and check whether the vehicle moves.
Does the vehicle move.
YES- Check for loose or poor connections at TCM connector terminals. If the connections are OK, update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good TCM, replace the original TCM.
NO- Replace the start clutch, then go to step 16.
16. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
17. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes under the same conditions as those indicated by the freeze data.
18. Check that DTC P1891 recurs.
Is DTC P1891 indicated?
YES- Replace the transmission assembly.
NO- The problem has been corrected.
