Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Perform an ignition coil test after finishing the fundamental tests for the ignition system and the fuel and emissions system.

1. Remove the ignition coil cover.
2. Remove the coil mounting bolts so the coils can move. Disconnect the four ignition coil 3P connectors.




3. Measure the voltage at the No.3 terminal of each ignition coil 3P connector with the ignition switch ON (II).

Is there battery voltage?

YES-Go to step 4.

NO-Repair open in the wire between ignition coil and No.4 (15A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.

4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.




5. Check for continuity between the No.2 terminal of each ignition coil 3P connector and body ground.

IS there continuity?

YES -Go to step 6.

NO-Repair open in the wire between ignition coil and body ground.

6. Disconnect the ECM 31P connector from the ECM.




7. Check for continuity between the body ground and ECM connector terminals C4, C12, C13 and C14 individually.

Is there continuity?

YES-Repair short in the wire between ignition coil and PCM.

NO-Go to step 8.

8. Connect the ECM 31 P connector.




9. Measure the voltage at the No.1 terminal of each ignition coil 3P connector with the ignition switch ON (II), and the engine start switch pressed.

Is there approx. 1 - 2 V?

YES-Replace the ignition coil.

NO-Repair open in the wire between ignition coil and ECM.
