Fuel Injected Engine
1. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke, with camshaft sprocket and flywheel timing marks aligned as outlined under CAM DRIVE SPROCKET, TIMING & BALANCER SHAFT BELT.2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect vacuum hose from power brake booster.
4. Disconnect ground cable from valve cover.
5. Disconnect ignition coil wire and radio condenser connector.
6. Remove air cleaner cover.
7. Slowly loosen service bolt on fuel filter approximately one turn to relieve fuel system pressure. Place shop towel around fuel filter to prevent fuel spray and allow fuel to drain into a suitable container.
8. Disconnect fuel pressure and return lines.
9. Disconnect air intake hose and resonator hose.
10. Disconnect accelerator linkage at throttle body.
11. Disconnect evaporative emission control hose at throttle body.
12. Disconnect and tag engine electrical connectors at intake manifold and cylinder head.
13. Disconnect and tag vacuum hoses at intake manifold and throttle body.
14. Remove emission control box and vacuum tank attaching bolts, then position aside with emission hoses attached.
15. Disconnect upper radiator hose and heater hose from cylinder head.
16. Disconnect coolant by-pass hose at water pump.
17. On models equipped with cruise control, remove actuator.
18. Remove power steering pump and alternator drive belts.
19. Disconnect inlet hose from power steering pump, then remove power steering pump from cylinder head. When disconnecting inlet hose, place shop towel over alternator.
20. Remove alternator assembly.
21. Remove intake manifold bracket.
22. Remove ignition distributor.
23. Remove cylinder sensor, then remove valve cover.
24. Remove timing belt middle cover, then remove crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover.
25. Loosen timing belt adjusting bolt and remove timing belt.
26. Remove camshaft bearing caps, camshafts and rocker arms.
27. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder head.
28. Separate intake and exhaust manifolds from cylinder head, if necessary.
Fig. 10 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence. W/Fuel Injected Engine:
29. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following;
a. Ensure cylinder head dowel pins, oil control jet O-ring and jet are properly aligned.
b. Prior to installing cylinder head, ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC. After installing cylinder head, do not rotate camshafts and/or crankshaft independently as engine may be damaged.
c. Using sequence shown in Fig 10, torque cylinder head bolts to specification.
d. Install timing belt and adjust valve timing as outlined under CAM DRIVE SPROCKET, TIMING & BALANCER SHAFT BELT.
e. When refilling cooling system, loosen bleed bolt on heater valve until coolant flows without air, then tighten bolt.
