Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection

WARNING: Do not smoke during the test. Keep open flame away from your work area. Be sure to relieve fuel pressure with engine off.

1. With the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the connector from the main relay behind the fuse box.

Main Relay Jumper Wire:

2. Connect the BLK/YEL wire and the YEL/BLK wire with a jumper wire.
3. Relieve fuel pressure.

a. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Fuel Filter Service Bolt:

b. Use a box end wrench on the 6mm service bolt at the top of the fuel filter, while holding the special banjo bolt with another wrench.
c. Place a rag or shop towel over the 6mm service bolt.
d. SLOWLY loosen the 6mm service bolt one complete turn.
4. After relieving fuel system pressure, tighten service bolt.
5. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the regulator.
6. Turn the ignition switch ON for 10 seconds and measure the amount of fuel flow.

Fuel Pump Volume:

AMOUNT SHOULD BE: 7.8 oz. (230 cc) minimum in 10 seconds at 12 volts.
6. If fuel flow is less than 7.8 oz. (230 cc), check the following:
a. Clogged fuel filter
b. Clogged fuel line
c. If there is no fuel flow, proceed to step 8
8. Remove jumper and reconnect connector to main relay.
9. Remove fuel filler cap.
10. Listen closely at fuel filler port, you should be able to hear the pump run for approx. 2 seconds after the ignition is first turned on.
a. If pump is working, check for obstructions or collapsed fuel lines. If pump is not working proceed to step 11.
11. Remove the left maintenance access cover in the luggage area.

Left Maintenance Access Cover:

CAUTION: Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF before disconnecting the wires.
12. Disconnect the connector.
13. Check that battery voltage is available at the fuel pump connector when the ignition switch is turned ON (Positive probe to the YEL/BLK wire, negative probe to the BLK wire).
a. If battery voltage is available, replace the fuel pump.
b. If there is no voltage, check the main relay and wire harness, see "DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING" under "COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS".
