Hesitation When Cold
PROBLEM
Before reaching normal operating temperature, the engine hesitates under light acceleration between 1,000-1,500 rpm.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Install the Ignition Coil Kit listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
1. Unplug the ignition coil connectors, then remove the coil and its mounting bracket.
2. Connect the new ignition sub-cord to the coil and bracket.
3. Mount the coil/bracket on the right shock tower. Relocate the radio noise condenser to the under-hood relay box mounting bolt.
NOTE: Make sure your hands and tools are free of grease, oil, and silicone lubricants before performing steps 4 through 13.
4. Cut the original ignition coil connector off of the BLU and BLK/YEL wires from the main wire harness.
5. Insert the BLU and BLK/YEL wires through the large round connector seal from the # 250 connector, then strip 5 mm of insulation from the wires.
6. Crimp and solder the large terminals from the # 250 connector to the wires.
NOTE:
^ Use the crimper tool, T/N 07JAZ-001 020A, from the Automobile Terminal Pin Repair Kit.
^ Solder the terminals sparingly or they won't slide into the connector.
7. Insert the BLU wire into the cavity nearest the lock barb on the round # 250 connector. Insert the BLK/YEL wire into the other cavity.
8. Cut the other original ignition coil connector off of the BLU and BLK/YEL wires from the distributor.
9. Slide one of the small sealing grommets from the # 90 connector over each wire, then strip 3 mm of insulation from the wires.
10. Crimp and solder the small terminals from the # 90 connector to the wires.
11. Insert the BLK/YEL wire into the right cavity on the rectangular # 90 connector (as viewed from the wire side with the lock barb up). Insert the BLU wire into the other cavity.
12. Connect the round and rectangular connectors to the ignition sub-cord. Replace the original high tension coil lead with the one provided in the kit. The double waterproof end goes into the coil.
13. Replace the original igniter unit with the one provided in the kit (see service manual, section 24).
14. Replace the spark plugs with the ones provided in the kit. Install the spark plug label over the existing spark plug information on the under-hood label.
NOTE: Advise the customer to use only ZFR5F-11 spark plugs for future replacement.
15. Replace the original fuel pressure regulator with the one provided in the kit (see service manual, section 12).
