Air Cleaner Housing: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 34 Intake Air Control Components:

This procedure requires an air cleaner temperature of less than 100° F (37° C).

1. Remove outside air intake duct. Start engine, run for 5 seconds and stop.

Expected result:
Air control door rises and remains up for at least 3 seconds. If OK, proceed to step 7. If not OK, continue.

2. Remove vacuum line from air control diaphragm, using a vacuum pump apply vacuum to diaphragm while looking though outside air intake duct. If door does not rise replace air control diaphragm.

3. Remove vacuum hose from air cleaner mounted air bleed.

4. Using a vacuum pump apply vacuum to air bleed.

Expected result:
Holds vacuum. If OK, proceed to step 7. If not OK, continue.

5. If air bleed valve does not hold vacuum replace air bleed valve.

6. Inspect check valve and source vacuum line. Replace as necessary.

7. Make sure air cleaner lid is installed. Start engine and run until cooling fan comes on. Air control door should be open (passage open to outside air).

8. If air control door did not open in above test replace air bleed valve.
