Increased Clutch Durability (Supersedes 88-029, dated FEB 10, '89)
PROBLEM
To meet the customer's durability expectations under frequent stop-and-go driving conditions, improved components provide increased life.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the clutch friction disc and pressure plate with the new parts listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
Warning: Inhaled asbestos fibers have been found to cause respiratory disease and cancer. Never use an air hose or dry brush to clean the clutch assembly. Use an
OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner or alternate method approved by OSHA, designed to minimize the hazard caused by airborne asbestos fibers.
1. Replace the clutch set, using the procedure outlined in the appropriate Service Manual.
2. Replace the clutch release bearing as a part of this procedure (standard part).
3. Adjust the clutch pedal free-play to specifications.
^ Verify proper adjustment of clutch pedal Switch A on the '88 Prelude hydraulicallyactuated system (Service manual page 12-3). Improper adjustment can disable the self-adjusting feature of the system, causing clutch slippage and premature wear.
NOTE:
^ The new clutch set (disc and pressure plate) called for in this bulletin must be installed as a unit. Combining either of these new components with the standard clutch disc or pressure plate will cause harsh clutch action, chattering, and short service life.
^ Clearly note on the repair order that new part number clutch components have been installed. Tell the customer to retain this information so the proper components can be installed if any future clutch work is needed.
^ Clutch pedal free-play is critical to clutch life. The decreased free-play that results from normal wear of the friction disk can eventually cause slippage, which accelerates the wear. After installation of the new clutch set, show the customer how to periodically check the free-play at the pedal during normal operation, and emphasize that the car must be returned for adjustment of the free-play if it becomes minimal.
