Product Update: Accord and Prelude Si A/T Countershaft Flange Nut (Supersedes 87-007, dated June 5, 1987)
PROBLEM

The countershaft flange nut on some Accord and Prelude Si automatic transmissions may loosen under certain conditions, possibly resulting in transmission damage.

DIAGNOSIS

Test drive the car; a loose countershaft nut may cause binding in reverse, final drive noise, slipping clutches or no up-shifts.

NOTE: To accurately diagnose these symptoms you must include a continuous test drive in reverse of about 200 feet.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

If the car exhibits any of the symptoms described under Diagnosis, you must remove, disassemble, inspect and repair the transmission as necessary.

If the car does not exhibit the symptoms described under Diagnosis, replace the countershaft flange nut, and torque and stake it as described under Repair Procedure.

CAUTION: Do not use a power wrench, and not push against the countershaft when removing or installing the nut.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected cars will be notified of this update by mail. Owners will be asked to contact their nearest Honda dealer for replacement of the countershaft flange nut. (See page 4 for text of customer letters).
This product update campaign has been extended to December 31, 1988.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Shift the transmission into Park.

2. Drain the transmission fluid.

3. Remove the right front wheel and the right side of the splash shield.

4. Remove the right radius rod.

5. Remove the center beam.

6. Support the front beam with a transmission jack and remove the 2 bolts from the right side of the beam

7. Remove the 2 lower bolts and loosen, but do not remove, the upper bolt on the rear engine mount.
8. Lower the front beam with the transmission jack until the transmission end cover clears the inner fender sheet metal, then remove the end cover. CAUTION:
^ Do not lower the transmission more than necessary or you may cause the shift cable to become kinked.
^ Be careful not to bend the feed pipes when removing the end cover. (Bent feed pipes may cause O-ring failure, which may lead to clutch wear and poor shift quality.) If a feed pipe gets bent, replace it.

9. Using hand tools, remove the countershaft nut. CAUTION:
^ Do not use a power wrench on the countershaft flange nut, and do not push against the countershaft when removing or installing the nut. Either of these actions may cause the split retainers on the countershaft to become dislodged, and will result in transmission damage.
^ If a piece of the countershaft nut's flange is missing, the transmission must be disassembled, inspected and repaired as necessary.

10. Install a new countershaft flange nut and torque to 120 N-m (12 kg-m, 90 ft.lbs.) for the 20 mm nut (P/N 90201-689-900), or 140 N-m (14/kg-m, 102 ft.lbs.) for the 23 mm nut (P/N 90202-PF4-000).

11. Stake the countershaft flange nut with a dull, rounded punch in 2 places to a depth of 1.0 mm.
12. Clean the mating surfaces and the end cover housing.

13. Install a new gasket and O-rings on the transmission center housing. Reinstall the end cover and torque the bolts to 12 N-m (1.2 kg-m, 9 ft.lbs.).

CAUTION: Fit the end cover by hand. (Do not use a hammer.) Use of excessive force may cause irreparable damage to the end cover and cause engine "flare" on 3-4 upshift.

14. Raise the front beam back into position and retighten the rear motor mount bolts.

15. Reinstall the front beam bolts, center beam, radius rod, splash shield and wheel. Torque the lug nuts to 110 N-m (11 kg-m, 80 ft.lbs.). Refill the transmission to the full mark, and recheck the level after the car has reached normal operating temperature.

16. Test drive the car, and include a continuous drive in reverse of about 200 feet.

17. Center punch a completion mark on the firewall above the first number "7" of the VIN.
