^ Grinds going into Reverse

The most common reason for any or all of the above problems on a Honda AS automatic four speed is due to a leak in the 4th gear oil circuit. Use the following steps to isolate the problem.

[Step 1]

Attach a 300 psi pressure gauge to the 4th gear pressure port (figure one). Run the engine until the transaxle is HOT. While the engine is running firmly apply the brakes and place the gear selector in reverse. Note the pressure. Turn off the engine and go to step 2.

[Step 2]

Attach a 300 psi pressure gauge to the 1st gear pressure port. With the engine running firmly apply the brakes. Place the gear selector into the D4 position. Note the pressure. Turn off the engine and go to step 3.

[Step 3]

If the pressure in reverse is lower than the pressure in drive, then the 4th clutch circuit is leaking. One of the most common reasons for this is a bent tab on the clutch pressure control valve body cover plate (figure two). To repair this, simply straighten the plate and sand it flat.

[Step 4]

It is very common for the LC cut valve retainer to work it's way out of position when the clutch pressure control valve body is tapped onto the feed pipes. If the retainer is above the valve body surface, the cover plate can bend when it is bolted down. Make certain the LC cut valve retainer is fully seated AFTER the clutch pressure control valve body has been assembled onto the transaxle. Install the LC cut valve retainer plate and complete the remaining assembly of the transaxle.
