Spark Plug Replacement Under Warranty

Supersedes Bulletins - 82-011 dated MAY 82

- 83-010 dated OCT 83
- 82-011 dated OCT 83

Spark plug fuel-fouling in new cars is usually caused by:

1. Many cold starts (generally not using the correct procedure) and short-distance driving done before the car is delivered to the dealership.

2. Customers not using the correct starting procedure.

Our testing of spark plugs replaced under warranty has shown that in nearly all cases, replacement wasn't necessary. So, before you decide to replace "fouled" plugs, follow this in-car clean-out procedure:

^ With the engine at normal operating temperature, accelerate rapidly in 1st or 2nd gear to about 5000 rpm.

^ Repeat this several times until the engine runs smoothly.

Spark plugs replaced under warranty will be tested using this clean-out procedure. If the plugs are found to be good, your claim will be debited.
