Shift Select Cable
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Shift select cable from TV cable guide bracket.
3. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
4. Six bolts and left splash shield from vehicle.
5. One nut, one lock washer and shift select cable from manual lever.
6. One E-clip and shift select cable from shift select cable bracket.
7. Two bolts and outer shift select cable grommet retainer from bulkhead.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Center console.
10. One spring clip and shift select cable from manual selector lever.
11. One E-clip and shift select cable from manual selector base.
12. Carpet retainer from carpet retaining bracket and pull back carpet from floor under I/P compartment.
13. Powertrain Control Module. Refer to POWERTRAIN MANAGEMENT.
14. Two bolts from inner shift select cable grommet retainer and shift select cable from vehicle through passenger compartment side of bulkhead.
Inspect
- Shift select cable for kinks, fraying or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Shift select cable into bulkhead from passenger compartment side; secure with two bolts at inner shift select cable grommet retainer.
- Tighten inner shift select cable grommet retainer bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
2. Powertrain Control Module.
3. Carpet to floor under I/P compartment; secure to carpet retaining bracket.
4. Shift select cable into manual selector base; secure with one E-clip.
5. Shift select cable to manual selector lever; secure with one spring clip.
6. Center console.
7. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
8. Outer shift select cable grommet retainer to bulkhead; secure with two bolts.
- Tighten outer shift select cable grommet retainer bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
9. Shift select cable into shift select cable bracket; secure with one E-clip.
10. Shift select cable into manual lever; secure with one lock washer and one nut. Do not tighten fully.
Adjust
- Shift select cable.
A. Rotate the manual lever counterclockwise until it reaches the park position.
B. Rotate the manual lever clockwise two detent positions until the manual lever is in the neutral position.
C. Install the shift select cable into the manual lever and secure with the shift select cable nut.
D. Pull the shift select cable taut making sure no deflection exists in the shift select cable.
- Tighten shift select cable nut to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
11. Left splash shield to vehicle; secure with six bolts.
- Tighten left splash shield bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Shift select cable into TV cable guide bracket.
14. Negative (-) battery cable.
Important: Upon completion of shift select cable installation, perform the following steps to ensure proper operation:
A. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector in P (park) position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. Vehicle should not move.
B. Verify that vehicle CANNOT be driven in N (neutral) position.
C. Verify that vehicle CAN be driven in D, 2, and L.
D. Verify that reverse gear DOES operate in R.
