K. Intermediate Brake Assembly
NOTICE: When installing new clutch discs in the 1st-reverse brake, underdrive brake, underdrive clutch, intermediate brake forward clutch or direct clutch assemblies, the new clutch discs MUST be soaked in Dexron-III Automatic Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346143 or equivalent, two hours prior to installation. This causes the clutch material on the discs to permeate with fluid which will aide in ease of assembly and prevent clutch overheating on first time engagement.INSTALL OR CONNECT
Important: The intermediate brake flange must be installed with the flat side facing upward and the stepped portion facing down.
1. Intermediate brake flange three intermediate brake discs and three intermediate brake plates into transaxle case in the following order.
A. Flange
B. Disc
C. Plate
D. Disc
E. Plate
F. Disc
G. Plate
2. Align the inner teeth of the intermediate brake discs.
3. Intermediate brake piston return spring into transaxle case.
4. 2nd coast brake band guide into transaxle case; secure with one bolt.
- Tighten 2nd coast brake band guide bolt to 10 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).
Important: The groove in the intermediate brake drum must line up with the 2nd coast brake band guide bolt hole. The 2nd coast brake band guide bolt aligns the intermediate brake drum so that the intermediate brake apply tube aligns with the intermediate brake piston apply passage.
5. Intermediate brake drum and piston into transaxle case aligning the slot in the intermediate brake drum with the 2nd coast brake band guide bolt.
6. Push down on the intermediate brake drum using two hammer handles until intermediate brake snap ring can be installed. DO NOT use metal tools to push down on the intermediate brake drum.
7. Intermediate brake drum snap ring into transaxle case.
8. Temporarily install the intermediate brake apply tube into the transaxle case to inspect intermediate brake piston operation.
Inspect
- Intermediate brake piston operation by applying 392 to 785 kPa (57 to 114 psi) of compressed air into the intermediate brake apply tube. Ensure that the intermediate brake piston applies and releases smoothly.
9. Remove the intermediate brake apply tube from the transaxle case.
