C. Differential Side Bearing Preload Adjustment Procedure
- Tools Required:- J 35405 Differential Preload Wrench
- J 26941 Countershaft Bearing and Drive Axle Seal Remover
- J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
- J 35552 Differential Side Bearing Race Installer
- J 8092 Driver Handle
1. Temporarily install the differential assembly into the transaxle case.
2. Temporarily install the torque converter housing onto the transaxle and secure with seventeen torque converter housing bolts.
- Tighten torque converter housing bolts to 29 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
3. Measure differential side bearing preload using a J 35405 and a torque wrench. Insert the J 35405 into the drive axle shaft bore in the torque converter housing until the J 35405 engages with the pinion shaft of the differential.
4. Rotate the differential several times in both directions to make sure the differential bearings have seated and then measure the differential side bearing preload (differential starting torque). Standard differential side bearing preload should fall within:
- New differential side bearings 0.8 to 1.4 Nm (7 to 12 ft. lbs.).
- Reused differential side bearings 0.4 to 0.7 Nm (4 to 6 ft. lbs.).
If differential side bearing preload is below specification, increase the size of the left differential side bearing selective shim in the transaxle case. If the differential side bearing preload is above specification, decrease the size of the left differential side bearing selective shim in the transaxle case.
Important: Differential side bearing selective shims sizes are available in increments of 0.05 mm (0.002 inch). Differential side bearing preload (differential starting torque) will change approximately 0.3 to 0.4 Nm (2.5 to 3.5 ft. lbs.) by increasing or decreasing one shim size.
5. Remove the seventeen torque converter bolts and the torque converter housing from the transaxle case.
6. Remove the differential assembly from the transaxle case.
7. Remove the left differential side bearing race and selective shim from transaxle case using a J 26941 with a J 2619-01.
8. Install an appropriate size left differential side bearing selective shim and race into the transaxle case using a J 35552 with a J 8092 and a hammer.
