Differential

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

- Tools Required:
- J 22888-20 Differential Side Bearing Puller
- J 35378 Differential Side Bearing Puller Pilot

1. Differential from transaxle. Refer to the "Transaxle."
2. Side bearings using a J 22888-20 puller and a J 35378 pilot. Place the legs of the puller into the cutouts on the speedometer driver gear.
3. Eight ring gear bolts and locking plates.
4. Ring gear with a copper or brass hammer.
5. Discard the bolts and locking plates.

6. Pinion shaft lock pin.
7. Pinion shaft from case.
8. Two pinion gears and 2 thrust washers.
9. Two side gears and 2 thrust washers.

Inspect
- Side bearings, ring gear, pinion shaft, pinion gears, and thrust washers, for chips or excessive wear. If any problems are found, replace components as necessary.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

- Tools Required:
- J 35409 Differential Side Bearing Installer
- J 35405 Differential Preload Wrench
- J 8001 Dial Indicator

1. Ring gear bolts.

Tighten
- Ring gear bolts uniformly and incrementally to 77 N.m (57 lb. ft.).

2. Side bearings using a J 35409 bearing installer and a press.

3. Two pinion gears and thrust washers.
4. Two side gears and thrust washers.
5. Pinion shaft.

Thrust Washer Thickness:

Measure
- Pinion gear backlash with J 8001 dial indicator. Measure one side of the gear while holding one pinion toward the case. If back lash is not 0.05 to 0.20 mm (0.0020 to 0.0079 inch), different thrust washers must be installed. Refer to Thrust Washer Thickness Table.

6. Try to select washers of the same size for both sides.

7. Pinion shaft lock pin and stake the differential case, after obtaining the correct backlash.
8. Differential into transaxle.

Measure
- Side bearing preload with the thinnest shim in the transaxle case using a J 35405 differential preload wrench and a torque wrench. If the preload is not 0.8 to 1.6 N.m (6.9 to 13.9 lb. ft.) for a new bearing or 0.5 to 1.0 N.m (4.3 to 8.7 lb. ft.) for a reused bearing, the following procedures must be performed:

9. Remove the outer race (transaxle case side) of the side bearing. Refer to the Transaxle procedure.

Selective Bearing Shims Table (E):

10. Select an adjusting shim. Refer to Selective Bearing Shims Table (E).
11. Preload will change 0.3 to 0.4 N.m (2.6 to 3.5 lb. ft.) with each shim thickness.
