Drive Pinion Shaft (Removal/Disassembly/Assembly)

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

- Tools Required:
- J 1859-03 Countergear Puller
- J 8614-01 Countergear Holder
- J 26941 Differential Side Bearing Puller
- J 23907 Slide Hammer





1. Measure drive pinion preload. Using a torque wrench, measure the preload of the drive pinion.
- New bearing 1.0 to 1.6 N.m (8.7 to 13.9 lb. in.).
- Reused bearing 0.5 to 0.8 N.m (4.3 to 6.9 lb. in.).
2. Drive pinion cap.





3. Counter driven gear. Using a chisel, loosen the staked part of the nut.








4. Install a J 8614-01 Countergear holder and remove nut. Countergear using a J 1859-03 Countergear puller.





5. Outer race from case using a J 26941 differential side bearing puller with a J 23907 slide hammer.
6. Oil slinger, spacer, and governor body drive gear. If the gear is too tight, remove it later.
7. Snap ring and insert brass bar into the case hole to tap out the drive position.





8. Tap out the drive pinion and remove the bearing cage from the bore.

DISASSEMBLE

- Tools Required:
- J 22912-01 Bearing Remover
- J 26941 Differential Side Bearing Seal Puller





1. Governor drive gear. Using a press and a J 22912-01 bearing remover.





2. Bearing cage from drive pinion.
3. O-ring from bearing cage.





4. Counter driven gear bearing using a press and a J 22912-01 bearing remover.





5. Pinion bearing and outer race of the drive pinion shaft using a press and a J 22912-01 bearing remover.





6. Using a J 26941 bearing seal puller, remove outer race from the bearing cage.
7. Oil seals from cage.

ASSEMBLE

- Tools Required:
- J 35661 Countergear Bearing Installer
- J 8092 Driver Handle
- J 35664 Pinion Shaft Bearing Installer
- J 29182 Pinion Shaft Bearing Cup Installer
- J 35666 Pinion Shaft Bearing Seal Installer





1. Using a J 35661 countergear bearing installer and J 8092 driver handle, install counter driven gear bearing.





2. Using a J 35664 pinion shaft bearing installer, install pinion bearing.





3. Using a J 29182 pinion shaft bearing cup installer, and a J 8092 driver handle, install a new outer race into the bearing cage.
4. Using a J 35666 pinion shaft bearing seal installer, install a new oil seal with the lip facing downward.





5. Oil seal press in depth (from flat end): 9.5 mm (0.37 inch).
6. Using a J 35666 pinion shaft bearing seal installer, face the lip of a new seal upward and press it in until its end is flush with the surface of the cage.





7. Coat the lip of the oil seal with GM # 1050169 grease.
