Checking Steering Column For Accident Damage - Standard

^ Tool Required:
- J 8001 Dial Indicator Set, Or Equivalent

CAUTION: Vehicles involved in accidents resulting in frame damage, major body or sheet metal damage, or where the steering column has been impacted or the SRS deployed, may have a damaged or misaligned steering column.

Inspect the following:
1. Steering column assembly.
a. Visually inspect steering shaft for sheared injected plastic.
b. If sheared plastic is present, a new shaft must be installed.
c. Any frame damage that could cause a bent steering shaft must have steering shaft runout checked.
2. Check runout.
a. Remove intermediate shaft.
b. Hold the ruler of Dial Indicator Set against the lower end of the shaft and have the steering wheel rotated. If runout exceeds 1.6 mm (0.063 inches), replace the steering shaft.
