Engine Removal
- Tool Required - J 28467-A Universal Support Fixture, or equivalent.1. Relieve fuel pressure. See Powertrain Management.
2. Negative (-) and positive (+) battery cables.
3. Battery.
4. Drain coolant system. See Cooling System.
5. Hood assembly. See Body and Frame.
6. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
7. Place a drain pan beneath oil pan to catch escaping oil.
8. Oil drain plug and gasket, allowing oil to drain.
9. Six bolts from each splash shield and shields from vehicle.
10. Drain transaxle oil (manual transaxle equipped vehicles) or transaxle fluid (automatic transaxle equipped vehicles). See Transmission and Drivetrain.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Accelerator cable from throttle lever.
13. Throttle cable from bracket (automatic transmission equipped vehicles).
14. Radiator with cooling fan assembly. See Cooling System.
15. Air cleaner (ACL).
a. Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor from the ACL cover.
b. Loosen the ACL hose clamp bolt.
c. Four clips and ACL cover, filter and hose from vehicle.
d. Two wire harness retaining clips from ACL lower case.
e. Three bolts and ACL lower case from vehicle.
16. Two bolts and coolant reservoir support bracket.
17. One bolt and windshield washer reservoir from vehicle (only on standard brake equipped vehicles), disconnecting electrical connector and hose.
18. Cruise control actuator with bracket (if equipped).
a. Unclip cruise control actuator cover and Remove from vehicle.
b. Accelerator cable from cruise control actuator.
c. Three bolts and cruise control actuator from vehicle.
d. Three bolts and cruise control actuator bracket from vehicle.
19. The following hoses:
a. Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) vacuum hose from gas filter.
b. Brake booster vacuum hose.
c. Vacuum hose from the Air Conditioning Solenoid Vacuum (A/C SV) valve (if equipped).
d. Air hose from the air pipe.
20. The following electrical connectors:
- A/C SV valve.
- MAP sensor.
- Data Link Connector (DLC).
- A/C triple pressure switch (if equipped).
- Engine ground wires from intake manifold, right and left fenders.
21. Two bolts, four electrical connectors and fuse and relay box from vehicle.
22. Hose from EVAP canister.
23. Loosen EVAP canister mounting bracket bolt and Remove EVAP canister from vehicle.
24. Loosen hose clamp and Remove engine coolant control valve inlet hose from thermostat housing.
25. Loosen hose clamp and Remove engine coolant control valve outlet hose from thermostat housing.
NOTE: Before removing fuel feed pipe and fuel return hose, place a container beneath the pipe and hose to catch escaping fuel.
26. Fuel feed pipe from fuel rail and intake manifold.
27. Fuel return hose from Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR).
28. Clutch release cylinder (manual transaxle equipped vehicles). See Transmission and Drivetrain.
29. Shift select cable from transaxle (automatic transaxle equipped vehicles). See Transmission and Drivetrain.
30. Shift select and shift control cables from transaxle (manual transaxle equipped vehicles). See Transmission and Drivetrain.
31. Left and right-side sill plates.
32. Knee bolster, glove box assembly, center console trim bezel, rear center console and center console from vehicle. See Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
33. Radio. See Accessories and Optional Equipment.
34. One bolt and set aside the left-side floor carpet bracket.
35. Two bolts from cruise control module and set aside.
36. Two Engine Control Module (ECM) electrical connectors.
37. Two wire harness electrical connectors.
38. From engine compartment, pull wiring harness and grommet through the bulkhead.
39. A/C compressor electrical connector (if equipped).
40. Four bolts and A/C compressor (if equipped) without disconnecting the hoses. Remove drive belt and relocate compressor, temporarily suspending from radiator support bracket.
41. Power steering pump (suspend power steering pump without disconnecting the hoses) and drive belt (if equipped). See Steering and Suspension.
42. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
43. Front exhaust pipe.
a. Two bolts from exhaust pipe support
b. Two bolts from front exhaust pipe-to-Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) mating flange.
c. Electrical connector from oxygen sensor (02S1) at front exhaust pipe.
d. Two nuts from front exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold mating flange and front exhaust pipe from vehicle.
44. Drive axles (left and right) from transaxle. For engine or transaxle removal, it is not necessary to Remove drive axle from steering knuckle. See Steering and Suspension.
45. Support engine with a universal support fixture.
46. Front and rear transaxle mounts. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
47. Lower vehicle.
48. Left transaxle mount. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
49. Engine mount.
50. Install engine hoist and Remove universal support fixture.
51. Before removing engine and transaxle, check to make sure all wires and hoses are disconnected.
52. Lift engine and transaxle assembly out of the vehicle carefully and slowly.
53. Starter motor positive (+) terminal nut, positive (+) battery cable and electrical connector from starter motor.
54. Two bolts and starter motor from transaxle case.
55. Separate transaxle from engine. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
a. Five bolts and lower engine reinforcement brace from engine and transaxle.
b. Flex plate-to-torque converter bolts.
c. Four engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate transaxle from engine.
56. Mark the flex plate-to engine position.
57. Six bolts and flywheel from crankshaft (manual transaxle equipped vehicles).
58. Six bolts, front spacer, flex plate and rear spacer from vehicle (automatic transaxle equipped vehicles).
59. Two bolts and rear end plate from engine.
60. Install engine assembly onto an engine stand.
