Installation

- Tool Required - J 8037 Piston Ring Compressor, or equivalent.

1. Apply oil to pistons, rings, cylinder walls, connecting rod bearings and crankshaft.

CAUTION: Install a piece of hose over threads of the connecting rod bolts to prevent damage to the threads, crankshaft and cylinder bore. Remove hose after connecting rod is in place.

2. When installing piston assembly into cylinder bore, point the arrow mark on piston head to crankshaft pulley side.

NOTE: Each upper bearing half has an oil groove and an oil hole; the lower bearing half does not.

3. Upper connecting rod bearing to connecting rod.
4. Piston assembly into original cylinder bore from which the piston was Removed. Guide the connecting rod into place on the crankshaft. Install a piston ring compressor, ensuring it sits firmly against the cylinder block until all piston rings have entered the cylinder bore. Using a hammer handle, gently tap the piston head to install the piston into the bore.
5. Lower connecting rod bearing to connecting rod bearing cap.
6. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
7. Connecting rod bearing cap to connecting rod with mark facing toward crankshaft pulley side; secure with two connecting rod bearing cap nuts. Tighten connecting rod bearing cap nuts in two steps; first to 29 Nm (22 ft. lbs.), then an additional 90 degrees.
8. Oil pan and oil pump screen.
9. Lower engine reinforcement brace to vehicle; secure with five bolts. Tighten lower engine reinforcement bolts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
10. Oil drain plug and new gasket. Tighten oil drain plug to 44 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Cylinder head.
13. Negative (-) battery cable.
14. Refill and check coolant level. See Cooling system.
15. Refill and check oil level.
16 Inspect upon completion of installation, start engine and check exhaust system for leaks. After completing that inspection, check oil pressure by running engine.
