Piston Ring: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

- Tool Required - J 24086-B Piston Pin Remover and Replacer Set, or equivalent.

CAUTION: Arrange the two compression rings and the oil ring in proper order after removal to ensure proper installation.

1. Two compression rings from piston using a piston ring expander.
2. Oil ring and two side-rail rings.

3. Mount the piston and connecting rod in a piston pin remover set with the arrow mark on the piston head facing up.
4. Piston pin from connecting rod using a piston pin remover set.

NOTE: Three sizes of pistons are available as standard size replacement parts to ensure proper piston-to-cylinder clearance. When installing a standard size piston, make sure to match the number stamped on the piston with the number stamped on the cylinder block. Use a piston marked with a 2 for a cylinder marked with a 2, etc.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Apply oil to piston pin holes in piston and connecting rod.
2. Connecting rod to piston; the mark on the connecting rod must match the mark on the piston.
3. Piston pin to piston and connecting rod using a piston pin replacer set.

NOTE: The lower compression ring has a 2R or T identification mark stamped on one side. When installing this ring to the piston, direct the marked side of the ring toward the top of the piston. The upper compression ring has no mark.

4. Oil ring and two side-rail rings to piston with hands.
5. Two compression rings to piston with lower compression ring mark facing up using a piston ring expander.
6. Position the piston rings so end gaps are approximately 90 degrees apart.
