Preliminary Checks

Perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check to determine if a malfunction has occurred within the electronic control system. The Powertrain OBD System Check must be the starting point for any transaxle electrical repairs because it directs the service technician to the next logical step. Understanding the chart and using it correctly will reduce diagnostic time and prevent the unnecessary replacement of functioning components. Computers and Control Systems

- Check transaxle fluid level. Refer to Checking Fluid Level in Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Check shift select cable adjustment. Refer to Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Check engine idle speed. Refer to Powertrain Management.
- Check tire inflation pressure. Refer to Steering and Suspension.

The condition of an automatic transaxle not operating properly may be influenced by one or a combination of the following items:
- Fluid bevel high or low. Refer to Fluid Level Checking Procedures.
- Engine performance. Refer to Powertrain Management.
- TV cable adjustment. Refer to TV Cable Adjustment.
- Shift select cable adjustment. Refer to Shift Select Cable.
- Internal fluid leaks. Refer to Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case Unit Repair.
- Electrical system. Refer to Powertrain Management.
- Transaxle or other mechanical components. Refer to On-Vehicle Service.
