Drive (D) or Second (2) Range - 1ST Gear
MECHANICAL OPERATION
In Drive (D) or Second (2) range (first gear), the hydraulic system allows line pressure to apply the forward clutch. As line pressure is applied to the forward clutch, the input shaft and the front planetary ring gear become engaged. This allows the clockwise rotation of the input shaft to be transmitted to the front planetary ring gear and then through the front planetary carrier. The clockwise rotation of the front planetary carrier causes the sun gear to turn counter-clockwise. The one-way clutch prevents the rear planetary carrier from turning clockwise forcing the rear planetary carrier pinion gears to turn clockwise on their axis. This causes the rear planetary ring gear and output shaft to turn clockwise.
ELECTRICAL COMPONENT FUNCTION
In Drive (D) range:
- Shift solenoid # 1-ON
- Shift solenoid # 2-ON
In Second (2) range:
- Shift solenoid # 1-OFF
- Shift solenoid # 2-ON
HYDRAULIC COMPONENT FUNCTIONS
Clutch/band apply circuit:
- Forward clutch
Active holding devices:
- One-way clutch
- Forward clutch
With the manual selector in Drive (D) or Second (2) range (first gear), line pressure passes through the manual valve and is applied directly to the forward clutch. Line pressure is also applied to the 2nd brake and forward clutch accumulators to reduce shock upon clutch engagement. Because the shift solenoid # 1 and shift solenoid # 2 are. energized, line pressure is relieved from the 1-2 and 2-3 shift valves preventing their operation.
Important
- In Drive (D) range 1st gear, both the shift solenoid # 1 and # 2 are energized. In Second (2) range 1st gear; only the shift solenoid # 2 is energized.
Line pressure is directed to the following valves and devices:
- Manual valve
- Forward clutch
- Primary regulator valve
- Throttle valve
- 2nd brake accumulator
- Forward clutch accumulator
- Secondary regulator valve
- Cooler bypass valve
