Oil Pan: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
3. Place a drain pan beneath engine oil pan to catch escaping engine oil.
4. Engine oil pan drain plug and gasket allowing engine oil to drain.
5. Front pipe/catalytic converter assembly from exhaust manifold. See Exhaust System.
6. Front pipe/catalytic converter assembly from resonator/center pipe. See Exhaust System.
7. Hanger supporting catalytic converter and remove pipe/catalytic converter assembly from vehicle. See Exhaust System.
8. Crankshaft position sensor, one bolt.
9. Two bolts and flywheel inspection cover.
10. Sixteen engine oil pan bolts and two nuts and engine oil pan from vehicle.
11. Oil pump strainer bracket bolt, oil pump strainer bolt and oil pump strainer from cylinder block.
12. Oil pump strainer seal.
13. Clean inside of engine oil pan and oil pump strainer screen and mating surfaces of engine oil pan and cylinder block.
INSTALLATION
1. Oil pump strainer with new oil pump strainer seal to cylinder block; secure with oil pump strainer bolt first and then oil pump strainer bracket bolt. Tighten oil pump strainer bolt first and then oil pump strainer bracket bolt to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
2. Apply a continuous bead of GM P/N 12346240 or equivalent, to engine oil pan mating surface.
3. Engine oil pan to cylinder block; secure with two nuts and sixteen bolts. Tighten engine oil pan nuts and bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.) starting at the center and working outward.
4. Crankshaft position sensor.
5. New gasket and engine oil drain plug. Tighten engine oil drain plug to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
6. New front pipe/ catalytic converter assembly seal to assembly.
7. Front pipe/catalytic converter assembly to exhaust manifold; secure with two bolts. Do not tighten fully.
8. Resonator/center pipe gasket to assembly. See Exhaust System.
9. Resonator/center pipe to front pipe/catalytic converter assembly; secure with two nuts. See Exhaust System.
10. Front pipe/catalytic converter assembly to vehicle; support catalytic converter with hanger. See Exhaust System.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Negative (-) battery cable.
13. Refill engine oil to specifications.
14. Upon completion of installation, start engine and check exhaust system for exhaust leaks. After completing that inspection, check oil pressure.
