Cylinder Block - Removal
TOOL REQUIRED- J 8037 Piston Ring Compressor

REMOVAL
1. Engine assembly.
2. Seven bolts, two nuts and intake manifold with throttle body, manifold gasket and wire clamps from cylinder head.
3. Three bolts and exhaust manifold heat shield from exhaust manifold.
4. Four bolts, three nuts and exhaust manifold with engine hanger and gasket from cylinder head.
5. Secondary (spark plug) wire clamps and wires from engine.
6. Four cylinder head cover nuts and seal washers (located under nuts) from cylinder head cover.
7. Cylinder head cover and gasket from cylinder head.
8. Loosen all valve lash adjusting screw lock nuts and turn back screws until all valves are closed.
9. Fourteen engine oil pan bolts and two nuts and engine oil pan from vehicle.
10. Oil pump strainer bracket bolt, oil pump strainer bolt and oil pump strainer from cylinder block.
11. Air conditioner compressor drive belt (if equipped) by releasing tensioner pulley and removing belt from crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
12. Two bolts and generator cover plate.
13. Loosen adjusting bolt on the upper generator mounting bracket and remove coolant pump/generator drive belt from vehicle.
14. Four crankshaft timing pulley bolts and crankshaft timing pulley from vehicle.
15. Retaining clips and engine wiring harness from timing belt cover.
16. Eight bolts, one nut and timing belt cover from vehicle.
17. Timing belt tensioner, tensioner plate, tensioner spring, spring damper and timing belt from cylinder block.
18. Air conditioner compressor and bracket from cylinder block (if equipped). See Heating and Air Conditioning.
19. Lock crankshaft with slotted screwdriver.
20. Crankshaft timing sprocket bolt, crankshaft timing sprocket, and timing belt guide.
21. Seven oil pump mounting bolts and oil pump from cylinder block with rubber seal.
22. Distributor from cylinder head.
23. Ten cylinder head bolts in sequence and cylinder head, with gasket, from cylinder block.
24. Install a piece of hose over thread of connecting rods to prevent damage to the crankshaft bearing Journal.
25. Pistons and connecting rods from cylinder block.
26. Five bolts and rear main seal housing from cylinder block.
27. Ten main bearing bolts and five main bearing caps with lower inserts from cylinder block. Remove starting at flywheel end and work toward crankshaft pulley end.
28. Crankshaft with upper inserts from cylinder block.
29. Flywheel retaining bolts and flywheel from crankshaft.
