Gearshift and Select Shaft Assembly
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Four bolts from gearshift guide case, set retaining clamp and engine wiling harness bracket aside.
2. Gear shift guide case from transaxle.
3. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
4. Place a drain pan or suitable container under transaxle.
5. Transaxle oil level/filler plug from transaxle.
6. Transaxle drain plug from transaxle using a 10 mm hex head socket or wrench, and drain transaxle oil.
7. Three bolts, left case cover and O-ring from left case.
8. Gearshift yoke bolt from gearshift yoke.
9. Remove drain pan from under transaxle.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Gearshift-interlock bolt and washer from the left case.
12. Gearshift and select shaft assembly from the left case.
13. Reverse interlock shaft roll pin from gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer.
14. 5th and reverse gearshift cam from gearshift and select shaft.
15. 5th and reverse cam guide return spring from gearshift and select shaft.
16. Gearshift Cain guide roll pin from gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer.
17. 5th and reverse gearshift cam guide from gearshift and select shaft.
18. Select spring guide and reverse select spring from gearshift and select shaft.
19. One washer and one C-clip from gearshift and select shaft.
20. Gearshift and select lever inner and outer roll pins from gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer.
21. Gearshift interlock plate and gearshift and select lever from gearshift and select shaft.
22. One C-clip and one washer from gearshift and select shaft.
23. Low speed select spring and select spring guide from gearshift and select shaft.
24. One C-clip from gearshift and select shaft.
Clean
- All parts with clean solvent and dry thoroughly.
Inspect
- All gearshift and select shaft parts for excessive wear, distortion, or damage. Replace as necessary.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. One C-clip onto gearshift and select shaft.
2. Select spring guide and low speed select spring onto gearshift and select shaft.
3. One washer and one C-clip onto gearshift and select shaft.
4. Gearshift interlock plate and gearshift and select lever onto gearshift and select shaft.
5. Gearshift and select lever inner and, outer roll pins into gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer.
6. One C-clip and one Washer onto gearshift and select shaft.
7. Reverse select spring and select spring guide onto gearshift and select shaft.
8. 5th and reverse gearshift cam guide onto gearshift and select shaft.
9. Gearshift cam guide roll pin into gearshift and select shaft using standard drift punch and hammer.
10. 5th and reverse cam guide return spring onto gearshift and select shaft.
Important
- When installing the 5th and reverse "gearshift" cam, load the 5th and reverse cam guide return spring by winding it one half to one full turn.
11. 5th and reverse gearshift cam onto gearshift and select shaft.
12. Reverse interlock shaft roll pin into gearshift and select shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer.
13. Gearshift and select shaft assembly into the left case.
14. Gearshift interlock bolt and washer into the left case.
Tighten
- Gearshift interlock bolt to 28 N.m (21 lb. ft.).
15. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
16. Align gearshift and select shaft assembly bolt hole with the gearshift yoke bolt hole.
17. Apply GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the, gearshift yoke bolt.
18. Gearshift yoke bolt into gearshift yoke.
Tighten
- Gearshift yoke bolt to 28 N.m (21 lb. ft.).
Inspect
- Left case cover O-ring for cuts or damage. Replace as necessary.
19. Left case cover O-ring and left case cover; secure with three bolts.
Tighten
- Left case cover bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb. in.).
20. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the breaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.
21. Transaxle drain plug after transaxle has completely drained.
Tighten
- Transaxle drain plug to 21 N.m (15 lb. ft.).
22. Add approximately 2.4 liters (2.5 qts.) of Castro Syntorq Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346190, or equivalent, into the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole. Oil level should be even with the bottom of the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole.
23. Transaxle oil level/filler plug into transaxle after applying GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to plug threads.
Tighten
- Transaxle oil level/filler plug to 21 N.m (15 lb. ft.).
24. Lower vehicle.
Clean
- Gearshift guide case mating surfaces.
25. Apply GM P/N 12346240, or equivalent, to gearshift guide case mating surfaces.
26. Gearshift guide case to transaxle.
27. Retaining clamp and engine wiring harness bracket to gearshift guide,case; secure with four gearshift guide case bolts.
Tighten
- Gearshift guide case bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb. in.).
