Gearshift Control Lever
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT1. Gearshift control lever knob from gearshift control lever by unscrewing counterclockwise.
2. Gearshift control lever upper boot from gearshift control lever.
3. Six screws and console from vehicle.
4. Four gearshift control lever housing nuts from gearshift control lever housing studs.
5. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
6. Gearshift control shaft rear through bolt and nut from gearshift control shaft.
7. Four gearshift control lever guide plate bolts and separate extension rod from gearshift control lever guide plate.
8. Gearshift control lever from vehicle.
9. Gearshift control lever boot cover from gearshift control lever.
10. Gearshift control lever lower boot from gearshift control lever.
11. Gearshift control lever snap ring, shim and gearshift control lever upper seat from gearshift control fever housing.
12. Two gearshift control lever housing-to-guide plate nuts, two washers and gearshift control lever housing from gearshift control lever guide plate.
13. Gearshift control lever/lower seat from gearshift control lever.
Inspect
- Gearshift control lever components for excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Gearshift control lever lower seat to gearshift control lever.
2. Gearshift control lever housing to gearshift control lever guide plate secure With two washers and two gearshift control lever housing-to-guide plate nuts.
Tighten
- Gearshift control lever housing-to-guide plate nuts to 40 N.m (29 lb. ft.).
3. Gearshift control lever upper seat and shim into gearshift control lever housing; secure with gearshift control lever snap ring.
4. Gearshift control lever lower boot onto gearshift control lever.
5. Gearshift control lever boot cover onto gearshift control lever.
6. Gearshift control lever into vehicle.
7. Extension rod to gearshift control lever guide plate; secure with four gearshift control lever guide plate bolts.
Tighten
- Gearshift control lever guide plate bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
8. Gearshift control shaft to gearshift control lever; secure with gearshift control shaft rear through bolt and nut.
Tighten
- Gearshift control shaft rear through bolt and nut to 20 N.m (15 lb. ft.).
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Four gearshift control lever housing nuts to gearshift control lever housing studs. Do no tighten fully.
Measure
- Distance from gearshift control lever knob to instrument panel with the gearshift control lever in the neutral position. Distance should measure 122 mm (4.8 inch). If the gearshift control lever is not at the correct distance from the instrument panel, move the control lever forward or backward to obtain the proper distance.
Gear Shift Lever Shim Table:
Tighten
- Gearshift control lever housing nuts to 6 N.m (53 lb. in.).
- Gearshift control lever vertical play. Vertical play should be no more than 0.2 mm (0.0007 inch). If gearshift control lever vertical play exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0007 inch), replace existing shim with a large shim.
11. Console into vehicle; secure with six screws.
12. Gearshift control lever upper boot to gearshift control lever.
13. Apply a light coat of GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the gearshift control lever.
14. Gearshift control lever knob to gearshift control lever by screwing on clockwise.
