Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT^ Tool Required:
- J 28712 Drive Axle Shaft-Boot Protectors
1. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
2. Place a drain pan or suitable container under transaxle.
3. Transaxle oil level/filler plug from transaxle.
4. Transaxle drain plug from transaxle using a 10 mm hex head socket or wrench, and drain transaxle oil.
5. Install J 28712 to the differential-side and wheel-side joints.
6. Drive axle from vehicle. Refer to Drive Axle Assembly in Drive Axle.
7. Drive axle shaft oil seal from transaxle.
INSTALL OR CONNECT

- J 35538 Axle Shaft Seal Installer
- J 36850 Transjel (tm) Transmission Assembly Lubricant
- J 28712 Drive Axle Shaft Boot Protectors
1. New drive axle shaft oil seal-with the spring side facing outward, using J 35538 and hammer.
2. Apply J 36850 to the new drive axle shaft oil seal tip.
Inspect
- Drive axle shaft surface where the seal makes contact with the drive axle. Surface should be smooth and free of scoring and burrs. If the drive axle surface is rough or scored, replace the drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle Assembly in Drive Axle.
3. Drive Axle into vehicle. Refer to Drive Axle Assembly in Drive Axle
4. Remove J 28712
5. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.
6. Transaxle drain plug into transaxle.
Tighten
- Transaxle drain plug to 21 N.m (15 lb. ft.).
7. Add approximately 2.4 liters (2.5 qts.) of Castrol (R) Syntorq Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12346190, or equivalent, into the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole. Oil level should be even with the bottom of the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole.
8. Transaxle oil level/filler plug into transaxle after applying GM P/N 1236004, or equivalent, to plug threads.
Tighten
- Transaxle oil level filler plug to 21 N.m (15 lb. ft.).
9. Remove drain pan from under transaxle.
10. Lower vehicle.
