Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

CAUTION: Vehicles involved in accidents resulting in frame damage, major body or sheet metal damage or where the steering column has been impacted or the SIR deployed, may also have a damaged or misaligned steering column.

NOTE: The steering shaft and column are not serviced separately. If either the shaft or column is found to be defective, replace the unit as an assembly.

Inspect the following:

1. Capsules are attached to steering column mounting bracket securely. If found loose, replace steering column. Check ripping plate for cracks, if found defective replace.

2. Measure the steering column. If it is shorter than 528 mm (20.79 inch), replace the steering column.
3. Steering shaft joints and steering shaft for any damage such as cracks, breaks, malfunction or excessive play. If anything is found faulty, replace the steering shaft joint.
4. Steering shaft for smooth operation. If found defective, replace the steering column assembly.
5. Steering shaft and column for bends, cracks or any deformation. If found defective, replace the steering column.
