Starter Solenoid: Service and Repair

Starter Motor Assembly-Manual Transaxle Vehicles:




Starter Motor Assembly-Automatic Trasaxle Equipped Vehicles:




REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative (-) battery cable from battery.
2. Retaining nut and positive (+) battery cable from solenoid.
3. Solenoid electrical connector.

Solenoid-to-Drive Housing Motor Matchmarks:




4. Scribe matchmarks on the solenoid and drive housing to ensure proper solenoid installation.

Removing Field Coil Lead Wire:




5. Retaining nut and field coil lead wire from solenoid.

Removing Solenoid Retaining Screws:




6. Two screws and solenoid from drive housing.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Lightly grease solenoid plunger with Lubriplate (R) lubricant GM P/N 1050109, or equivalent.

Installing Solenoid:




2. Solenoid to drive housing, aligning solenoid-to-drive housing matchmarks; secure with two screws.
3. Field coil lead wire to solenoid; secure with retaining nut.
Tighten
^ Field coil lead wire retaining nut to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
4. Solenoid electrical connector.
5. Positive (+) battery cable to solenoid; secure with retaining nut.
Tighten
^ Positive (+) battery cable-to-solenoid retaining nut to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
6. Negative (-) battery cable to battery.
Tighten
^ Negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 15 N.m (11 lb. ft.).
