Valve Spring: Testing and Inspection

MEASURE





1. Each valve spring free length using a Dial Caliper. Standard free length is 42.29 mm (1.6649 inches) with a minimum free length of 41.00 mm (1.6142 inches).





2. Using a Valve Spring Tester, measure preload. Standard preload is 20.9 to 23.5 kg at 32.6 mm (46.1 to 51.8 lbs. at 1.28 inches), with a limit of 18.7 kg at 32.6 mm (41.2 lbs. at 1.28 inches).





3. Valve spring squareness using a square and surface plate to check each valve spring for squareness in terms of clearance between end of valve spring and square. Valve springs with a clearance larger than 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) must be replaced.
