Cylinder Head - Assembly

INSTALLATION
1. Valve spring seat to cylinder head.

2. New oil seal to valve guide. After applying engine oil to oil seal and spindle of Valve Guide Seal Installer Kit fit oil seal to spindle, and then install oil seal to valve guide by pushing Valve Guide Seal Installer Kit by hand. After installing, check to be sure that oil seal is properly fitted to valve guide.

CAUTION: When installing, never tap or hit the Valve Guide Seal Installer Kit with a hammer. Install oil seal to guide by pushing the Valve Guide Seal Installer Kit by hand only. Tapping or hitting tool may cause damage to the oil seal.

3. Valve to valve guide. Before installing valve to valve guide, apply engine oil to oil seal, valve guide bore and valve stem.

4. Valve spring and valve spring retainer. Each valve spring has large-pitch end (top) and small-pitch end (bottom). Be sure to position valve spring in place with its small-pitch end facing the bottom (valve spring seat side).
5. Using a Valve Spring Compressor and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter, compress valve spring and fit two valve cotters into groove provided on the valve stem.
6. Remove the Valve Spring Compressor and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter.

7. Before installing HVL adjuster to cylinder head fill oil passage of cylinder head with engine oil according to the following procedure: pour engine oil through camshaft journal oil holes and check that engine oil comes out from engine oil holes in HVL adjusters bores.

8. HVL adjuster to cylinder head. Apply engine oil around HVL adjuster before installing it to cylinder head.

9. Camshaft to cylinder head. After.applying engine oil to camshaft journal and around all cams, position camshaft into cylinder head so the camshaft timing gear pin hole in the camshaft is at lower position.
10. Camshaft housings to camshaft and cylinder head, as follows:
- Apply engine oil to sliding surface of each housing against camshaft journal.

- Apply GM P/N 12346240 or equivalent, to the mating surface of No. 1 and No. 3 housings which will mate with the cylinder head.
- Because camshaft housing No. 1 retains the camshaft in proper position as to thrust direction, make sure to secure No. 1 housing to No. 1 journal of camshaft first. Do not tighten fully.

Fig. 14 Camshaft Housing Bolt Tightening Sequence:

- Two remaining camshaft housings to journals of camshaft; secure with camshaft housing bolts after applying engine oil to bolts. Tighten camshaft housing bolts in sequence. Tighten a little at a time and evenly among bolts. Repeat tightening sequence three or four times until they are tightened to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
