Cylinder Block - Removal

TOOL REQUIRED
- J 8037 Piston Ring Compressor
- J 34853 Crankshaft Oil Seal Guide

REMOVAL
1. Engine assembly.
2. Five nuts, two bolts and intake manifold with throttle body fuel injection (TBI) unit, manifold gasket and wire clamps from cylinder head.
3. Three bolts and exhaust manifold heat shield from exhaust manifold.
4. Four bolts, three nuts and exhaust manifold with engine hanger and gasket from cylinder head.
5. Secondary (spark plug) wire clamps and wires from engine.
6. Four cylinder head cover nuts and seal washers (located under nuts) from cylinder head cover.
7. Cylinder head cover and gasket from cylinder head.
8. Fourteen engine oil pan bolts and two nuts and engine oil pan from vehicle.
9. Oil pump strainer bracket bolt, oil pump strainer bolt and oil pump strainer from cylinder block.
10. Air conditioner compressor drive belt (if equipped) by releasing tensioner pulley and removing belt from crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
11. Two bolts and lower generator cover plate.
12. Loosen adjusting bolt on the upper generator mounting bracket and remove coolant pump/generator drive belt from vehicle.
13. Five crankshaft pulley bolts and crankshaft pulley from vehicle.
14. Retaining clips and engine wiring harness from timing belt cover.
15. Seven bolts, one nut and timing belt cover from vehicle.
16. Timing belt tensioner, tensioner plate, tensioner spring, spring damper and timing belt from cylinder block.
17. Air conditioner compressor and bracket from cylinder block. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
18. Lock crankshaft with slotted screwdriver.
19. Crankshaft timing gear bolt, crankshaft timing gear, and timing belt guide.
20. Seven oil pump mounting bolts and oil pump from cylinder block with rubber seal.
21. Distributor from cylinder head.

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

22. Eight cylinder head bolts in sequence shown and cylinder head, with gasket, from cylinder block.
23. Install a piece of hose over thread of connecting rods to prevent damage to the crankshaft bearing journal.
24. Pistons and connecting rods from cylinder block.
25. Five bolts and rear main seal housing from cylinder block.
26. Eight main bearing bolts and four main bearing caps with lower inserts from cylinder block.
27. Crankshaft with upper inserts from cylinder block.
28. Flywheel retaining bolts and flywheel from crankshaft.
