Distributor Disassembly, Test and Reassembly

DISTRIBUTOR DISASSEMBLY TEST AND REASSEMBLY

TOOL REQUIRED
J 39200 Digital Multimeter

PROCEDURE

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Rotor from distributor housing.
2. Ignition coil dust cover and gasket from distributor housing.
3. Two nuts and four wires from the ignition coil terminals.

Ignition Coil Screws:

4. Four screws and ignition coil from distributor housing.
5. One screw and harness retainer from distributor housing.

Noise Suppressor Condenser:

6. One screw and noise suppressor condenser from distributor housing.

NOTICE: The term "cold" refers to temperature ranging from - 10°C (14°F) to 50°C (104°F). The term "hot" refers to temperature ranging from 50°C (104°F) to 100°C (212°F).

MEASURE
1. The resistance of distributor connector when cold, between terminals 1 and 2, using a J 39200. If the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor resistance is not between 185 and 275 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
2. The resistance of distributor connector when warm between terminals 1 and 2, using a J 39200. If the CMP sensor resistance is not between 240 and 325 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
3. Air gap between the signal rotor and CMP sensor. If the air gap is not between 0.2-0.4 mm (0.008-0.016 inch), replace the distributor housing.

Inspecting Distributor Shaft:

INSPECT
^ Shaft for roughness or wear. If it feels rough or worn, replace the distributor housing assembly.
^ Distributor cap and rotor for cracks, terminal corrosion and wear; replace as necessary.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Noise suppressor condenser to distributor housing; secure with one screw.
2. Harness retainer to distributor housing; secure with one screw.
3. Connector to harness retainer.
4. Ignition coil to distributor housing; secure with four screws.
5. Four wires to ignition coil terminals; secure with two nuts.

NOTICE: When connecting the wires to the ignition coil, insert them properly into their grooves found on the side of the ignition coil and make sure the wires do not come in contact with the signal rotor or distributor housing.

^ Tighten ignition coil terminal nuts to 8 Nm (71 lb. in.).

6. Ignition coil dust cover and new gasket to distributor housing.
7. Rotor to distributor housing.
