Transaxle Codes
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) CIRCUIT (OPEN/SHORTED CIRCUIT)
Circuit Description:
The VSS is an electronic relay that is mounted on the transaxle. As the transaxle turns, the VSS provides the speedometer with a vehicle speed input (voltage pulses). This input is used to drive the speedometer. The speedometer then converts the vehicle speed input into a more precise waveform and provides the PCM and the Cruise Control Module each with its own vehicle speed input The PCM converts this input (ground pulses) into a vehicle speed.
DTC 42 will set if the following condition is met for at least eight seconds:
^ Vehicle speed input not sensed at the PCM with engine speed between 3000 and 5000 RPM with the transaxle in gear.
Test Description:
Numbers(s) below refer to the circled number(s) on the Diagnostic Chart.
1. This determines if the VSS is functioning normally.
2. This checks for an opening the power feed to the VSS.
3. This checks for an open or a short in the PCM speed input circuit or for a faulty PCM.
4. This determines if the PCM or the speedometer is faulty.
5. This checks for an open in the ground to the VSS.
6. This checks for an open in the power feed to the speedometer.
7. This determines if the VSS or the speedometer is faulty.
Diagnostic Aids:
Check GAUGE Fuse for an open, and grounds for clean tight connections.
Check for poor connections at component and inline harness connector terminal connections before replacing components. After repairs have been made, repeat the PCM OBD System Check to ensure the system is functioning normally.
