Hard to Start
DEFINITIONEngine cranks OK, but does not start immediately. Eventually starts but will not remain running.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
^ Perform the careful "Visual And Physical Checks" in Preliminary Checks. Testing and Inspection
FUEL SYSTEM
^ CHECK: Circuit opening relay operation - fuel pump should operate when engine is cranking. Use Chart A1-7A: Fuel System Circuit Opening Relay Check. Chart A1-7A Fuel System Circuit Opening Relay Check
^ CHECK: Contaminated fuel.
^ NOTICE: A faulty in-tank fuel pump check valve will allow the fuel in the pipes/hoses to "drain back" to the tank after engine is stopped. To check for this condition, refer to Fuel System Pressure Test.
IGNITION SYSTEM
^ CHECK: For proper ignition voltage output with J 26792 or equivalent.
^ CHECK: Spark plugs. Remove spark plugs, check for wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes, or heavy deposits. Repair or replace as necessary.
^ CHECK: Moisture in distributor cap.
^ CHECK: Bare or shorted wires.
^ CHECK: Worn distributor shaft.
^ CHECK: For good wiring connections from ECM to distributor.
^ CHECK: Signal rotor air gap. Refer to Distributor Disassembly, Test and Reassembly. Service and Repair
ADDITIONAL CHECKS
^ CHECK: Idle Air Control (IAC) valve operation. Refer to Idle Air Control Valve. Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic
^ CHECK: Basic engine problem. Refer to Engine / Testing and Inspection. Engine
^ CHECK: Service Bulletins for calibration updates.
