Steering Column - Removal and Installation

Removal

Wheels must be in straight ahead position and the key must be in the LOCK position when removing or installing the steering column. Failure to do so may cause the airbag coil assembly to become uncentered and may result in unnecessary airbag system repairs.
1. Disarm airbag system (SIR) as described under ``Airbag System Disarming.''
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Unclip left front carpet retainer, then loosen two screws and disconnect hood release lever from knee bolster.
4. Remove two trim caps, then the four bolts securing knee bolster to the instrument panel.
5. Pull out instrument panel left-side ventilation duct.
6. Loosen five screws and remove upper and lower steering column trim covers.
7. Disconnect steering column electrical connectors.
8. Remove steering column pinch bolt.
9. Remove two bolts, two nuts and remove the steering column from the instrument panel.

a. Torque steering column mounting bolts to 19 lb ft
b. Torque steering column pinch bolt to 26 lb ft
