Ignition Timing Adjustment

Timing Mark:

1. Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature has been attained.

2. Turn all electrical accessories "OFF."

3. Remove the check connector cap. Connect a tachometer between the battery and the check connector IG terminal.

NOTE: DO NOT ground the check connector IG terminal. Grounding this terminal could result in damage to the igniter or the ignition coil.

NOTE: Make certain that the tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before installation. Incompatible equipment installation could cause damage to the ignition system.

4. Adjust engine idle speed to 700 rpm using the engine idle speed adjusting screw.

5. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" and connect the pick-up lead of a timing light to the number one spark plug. Use a jumper lead between the spark plug wire and the spark plug or use an inductive type pick-up. DO NOT pierce the wire or attempt to insert probe between the spark plug wire and boot.

6. Connect the timing light power lead according to the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Insert a jumper wire between check connector terminals E1 and TE1.

8. Start the engine and aim the timing light at timing mark. The notch on the crankshaft pulley should line up at 10° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) on the timing indicator at each flash of the timing light. If an adjustment is required loosen the distributor mounting bolts. While observing the timing indicator with the timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until a 10° BTDC reading is obtained.

9. Tighten distributor mounting bolts to 20 N-m (15 lb. ft.) and recheck ignition timing and adjust as required.

10. Remove the jumper wire from the check connector and install the cap. Recheck ignition timing. Ignition timing should be varying between 0 and 20° BTDC adjust as required.

11. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF," remove the timing light and reconnect the number one spark plug wire if removed.
