Remove or Disconnect
Tool Required: J 28467-A Universal Support Fixture.
Remove or Disconnect
1. Battery negative (-) cable. Then raise and suitably support the vehicle.
2. Right front wheel.
3. Right lower stone shield.
4. Two mount nut and stud protectors.
5. Two rear transaxle mount-to-main crossmember nuts.
6. Two center transaxle mount-to-center crossmember nuts. Lower vehicle and pull out windshield washer reservoir.
7. Engine wiring harness from upper timing belt cover and then loosen the air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, and generator as applicable. Refer to air conditioning, to steering and pump, and charging system.
8. Accessory drive belts.
9. Crankshaft pulley. Refer to the Crankshaft Pulley.
10. Spark plugs.
11. Cylinder head cover. Refer to the Cylinder Head Cover.
12. Windshield washer reservoir and then support the engine using a J 28467-A sup fixture.
13. Right engine mount through bolt and then raise the engine.
14. Water pump pulley, then lower the vehicle.
15. Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to air conditioning.
16. Timing belt covers. Refer to the Timing Belt Covers.
Aligning Camshaft Gear Hole And Exhaust Camshaft Cap Mark:
17. Timing belt guide, then loosen the idler pulley bolt, move the idler pulley out of the way and temporarily tighten it.
18. Timing belt.
Important
- If the timing belt will be reinstalled, draw a direction arrow on the belt in the direction of engine revolution and place matchmarks on the pulleys and belt.
19. Idler pulley bolt, pulley, and return spring.
20. Crankshaft timing gear. Refer to the Camshaft.
21. Camshaft timing gear. Refer to the Camshaft.
Inspect
1. Timing belt for the following conditions:
- Premature parting.
- Cracked or damaged belt teeth.
- Noticeable wear or cracks on the belt face.
- Wear or damage to one side of the belt.
- The above conditions may be caused by improper installation, a locked camshaft, nicks on one side of the idler pulley lock, improper guide and/or pulley alignment, or foreign material on the pulley teeth. Replace components as required to correct the condition.
2. Idler pulley for freedom of rotation. If any roughness is felt, replace the idler pulley.
- Tension spring free length. If free length is not 38.4 mm (1.512-inch), replace the tension spring.
