Install or Connect

Tool Required: J 28467-A Universal Support Fixture.

Install or Connect
1. Camshaft timing gear. Refer to the Camshaft.

Important
- Keep water and foreign materials away from the camshaft, camshaft pulley, crankshaft pulley, and idler pulley.

2. Crankshaft timing gear. Refer to the Camshaft.

3. Idler pulley, mount bolt, and tension spring. Pry the idler pulley to the left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten it.
4. Timing belt.

Important
- If reusing a timing belt, align the points marked during removal and install the belt with the arrow pointing in the direction of engine rotation.
- Loosen the timing belt idler pulley mount bolt.
- Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft 2 revolutions from TDC to TDC.
- Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. Verify that all of the components are properly aligned, check the valve timing, and install the timing belt idler pulley bolt.







Tighten: Timing belt idler pulley bolt to 37 Nm (27 lb.ft.). Remove the temporarily installed crankshaft pulley bolt.

Inspect: Timing belt deflection. If timing belt deflection is not 5 to 6 mm (0.20 to 0.24-inch) at 20 Nm (4.4 lb. ft.), the idler pulley must be adjusted.

5. Timing belt guide.
6. Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to air conditioning.
7. Timing belt covers. Refer to Timing Belt Cover. Raise the engine.
8. Water pump pulley. Lower the engine.
9. Right engine mount through bolt.

Tighten: Right engine through bolt to 87 Nm (64 lb. ft.). Then remove the J 28467-A universal support fixture.

10. Windshield washer reservoir.
11. Cylinder head cover with gasket. Refer to the Cylinder Head Cover.
12. Spark plugs.
13. Crankshaft pulley. Refer to the Crankshaft Pulley.
14. Air conditioning, power steering pump, and generator drive belts and adjust as applicable. Refer to air conditioning, power steering gear and pump, and charging system.
15. Engine wiring harness to upper timing belt cover. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
16. Two center transaxle mount-to-center crossmember nuts.
17. Two rear transaxle mount-to-main crossmember nuts.

Tighten: Center transaxle mount-to-center crossmember nuts to 61 Nm (45 lb.ft.). Rear transaxle mount-to-main crossmember nuts to 61 Nm (45 lb.ft.).

18. Two mount nuts and stud protectors.
19. Right lower stone shield.
20. Right front wheel. Lower vehicle.
21. Battery negative (-) cable.
22. Windshield washer reservoir.
